bad week 2026 day 9 - cowboy
a crudely drawn cowboy stands out in a field saying "city folks just don't get life out on the prairie." A snake comes down from out of frame and eats the cowboy. The snake's body is now wrapped around the cowboy's body, conforming loosely to the shape of a cowboy, including the boot shapes and a bulge for the hat. "Hello yes-" says the snake "I am a cows boy." The snake cowboy looks out across the land, saying "You may see this land as merciless, but it is heaven, the only one I can imagine."

My assignment for Winona Nelson's SmArtschool class: Choose a favorite book and illustrate a cover for it.

I picked "The Song of Achilles" by Madeline Miller, and my goal was to capture a similar bittersweet tone as the novel has.
Achilles and Patroclos, standing next to each other in front of a raging fire. Achilles is outfitted for battle and looks wistfully into the distance, while Patroclos ties some laces of his armor, also looking sad. Behind them and above there's the mosaic of a warrior in his chariot.

Door of Destinies - for Magic: The Gathering's "Lorwyn Eclipsed". AD: Tom Jenkot

I was asked to use a cut-paper style for this piece, but as I don't usually work in that medium, I thought I'd try and emulate the look using acryla gouache instead! I think it turned out really cool.
A horned figure (a flamekin) stands in front of a doorway - flames issue forth from the doorway and the figure. The figure wields fire in one hand and a spear in the other.
