The first few times working through a dichotomous key takes a really long time, but it gets faster each time after that. It feels like a “choose your own adventure” book but for plants!

I recommend the book “Plant Identification Terminology: An Illustrated Glossary” by James G Harris and Melinda Woolf Harris to help with learning the vocab. Having that and the key open (and a loupe ready in case you need to see details on the plant) should get you where you want to go

Have you tried using a botanical key for your region? It can be hard to learn the terminology for the anatomical parts, but once you get over that learning curve, dichotomous botanical keys (even more than field guides) are the way to learn nomenclature!

if you can’t do the whole face or eyes, covering your eyebrows (hat/bandanna/etc) goes a long way with what it picks up! At least in the winter there’s an excuse for covering your face, it’s so much more annoying in the summer!
