The second paper from my post doc working on IODP Exp 398 is out! We show regional rifting has modulated volcanic processes at Santorini Volcano with rapid rifting resulting in a phase of highly explosive caldera forming eruptions! 🌋

Tectonic modulation of caldera volcanism on the South Aegean Volcanic Arc
Many highly hazardous, caldera-forming explosive eruptions occur in extensional tectonic regimes, but the role of lithospheric rifting in modulating c…

A new Exp398 study led by @abigaillily.bsky.social showed that caldera volcanism is associated with rifting on the South Aegean Volcanic Arc, Santorini and Kos Volcanoes may be coupled by regional lithospheric stresses...

The Kos Plateau Tuff eruption of the Kos Volcano 161,000 years ago poured pyroclastic flows into the Aegean Sea. IODP #exp398 found the submarine products of the eruption 200 to 300 m thick, 140 km away from source NE of Santorini.

Submarine ash megabed fed by far-traveled, shoreline-crossing pyroclastic currents from a large explosive volcanic eruption
Volcanic ash from an eruption in Greece poured into the sea, forming a bed 200 m thick in a submarine basin far from the volcano.

🚨New Publication
@abigaillily.bsky.social & Exp398 discovered a 200m thick volcanic ash layer >140km from its source. The discovery shows that large eruptions in marine environments can remodel the seafloor & regionally destroy marine life during catastrophic events.

And there we have it. The 8th eruption from the #Svartsengi magma reservoir. By far the smallest one in terms of eruption time, area and volume.

Updated lava comparison map that also includes the #Fagradalsfjall eruptions.

Expedition 398 E&O Officer Susan just published a book on the amazing cores we drilled in and around Santorini.
It's great for anyone (layperson to expert) who wants to learn about these stunning cores.
The best thing of it all? You can download it 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 here:

It's so hard out there right now, especially for early career scientists. Publishing expectations have never been higher, and it's taking a year or more for papers to go through peer review, largely because of these delays. I know things are hard, but if you're publishing, you should be reviewing.

During the last six months there’s been a substantial increase in academics approaching me to ask about leaving #academia

This article articulates many of the reasons why they’re doing that…

Universities are in trouble, and it’s not just money we’re talking about. They are living through something of a crisis of confidence, even of trust and faith. More and more, I find myself, and my col...
