How hot is the North Pacific?

The latest data from ECMWF for August, 2025, puts the average sea surface temperature at 6.212 standard deviations above the 1951-2000 average.

If SSTs were normally distributed (they aren't), that would be about 1-in-3.8 billion by chance.

The 365 day running average for global surface temperature is once again less than 8 standard deviations above the 1941-1970 average.

That's about 1-in-1.125 quadrillion by chance alone.
