To be clear.

Sam Keith leaves it ambiguous as to whether or not Mr. Gone can be redeemed, & while I absolutely believe some crimes & abuses can be walked back, Mr Gone was a serial rapist & is completely irredeemable.

Though he is also a product of sexual violence himself & is perpetuating a cycle

The only time I can really think of this being appropriately interrogated is Sam Keith's The Maxx (comic only, show doesn't touch this.) Where the last two volumes are all about examining if its even possible for someone like Mr Gone to even be redeemed no mater how much good he does.

I don't even think the redeemed villain trope is necessarily a problem on its face.

But it skips so much, like becoming a better person is serious actual work. Which is never shown in media. In movies its always a heroic sacrifice & then credits.
