Yeahhhhh....

This shit was super legally risky (not to mention morally indefensible) under the best imaginable government and the PSL could not have exposed more kids to serious risks if they led entire marches into police kettles...

...which they are also known for.

None of this is to say that what Trump is doing right now isn't a dramatic escalation or that we shouldn't fight it with every ounce of our strength.

We should, however, give up on "inexplicable and unprecedented form of madness grips the masses" narratives. This has been with us for a long time.
acerbicnerd.bsky.social
Whole lotta folks are gonna tell you how unprecedented this all is and how much they wish we could go back to old-fashioned "reasonable" conservatives.

I'd just like to point out that our former PM, Stephen Harper led a national witch-hunt over the Tides foundation more than a decade ago.

Have a different perspective? Fine, let's have that discussion.

But can we be clear about the difference between "this is a superior way to combat their arguments" and "I'm willing to risk raising their profile on the chance that it elevates mine as well"?

"I've never been a proponent of deplatforming..."

Are we still doing this?

You wrote a whole article about the ethics of engaging with Fuentes and still haven't thought to reflect at all on the years of high-profile public debates ya did with these people?

I'm picturing the maverick profiler giggling as they handed that one in.

Schiff: "If a president in secret can put names on a list and kill them, then there is no war power still retained by Congress, and there's no check on an executive who may drag us into another war."

"Government censors journalist who questions the Ukraine war" is a really easy story to tell (or infer) about this case, but by all appearances the truth is probably closer to "dude got strung up for the one and only article he ever wrote that Ukrainians actually liked".

Might be worth mentioning Alexander's personal involvement with said "charity", and the stuff about their whole board resigning over the scandal...

This is the (v. well-known) part of the story that deserves further coverage (but probably won't get it cuz lawyers are expensive).
Pugliese himself framed the episode as another attack on Canada’s fourth estate by a politician. His reporting on various scandals related to the country’s Afghanistan mission may have embarrassed Alexander personally, given his deep diplomatic and parliamentary connections to the deployment. Pugliese has also exposed shocking details about the controversial Victims of Communism monument, recently unveiled in Ottawa. The project, launched by Harper, drew fierce criticism for its plan to commemorate Nazi collaborators and suspected war criminals. Alexander, then immigration minister, became one of the memorial’s most visible champions, regularly appearing beside minister Jason Kenney to promote it.

Two points are worth noting. Alexander asserted the photocopied documents were authentic but provided the committee with no evidence of how the conclusion—that cast Pugliese as a covert operative in Russia’s orbit—was reached. And by levelling his allegations under the protection of parliamentary privilege, he guaranteed he could not be sued for defamation.

Don't worry, they'll still be issuing verdicts in terms of "naughty" or "nice".

Tragic news from Canada where the Canadian Supreme Court has gone from the official dress on the left to the one on the right
Canadian Supreme court. Everyone is dressed in bright red wooly gowns, with a beige trim. It looks sort of like a Santa robe The Canadian Supreme court. Everyone is dressed in black gowns with a bright white kravat, and two thin red vertical lines on the side of the robe

If this is how bad things are getting when things are going well for them, how does anyone expect them to react when they start to meet serious resistance? What will these people do when backed into a corner?

That's what Jan 6 was, and we have every reason to expect far worse this time around.
acerbicnerd.bsky.social
At the risk of being labelled a "doomer", we're not really doing much other than adjusting our expectations every time events hit a new level that seemed unthinkable yesterday. This is all becoming normalized far faster than any visible kind of outrage can mount.

Every day that this continues witnesses another set of legal/institutional norms shattered, bureaucracies purged, goon squads hired and precedents set.

Each of those developments means it will be measurably more difficult to rise up if and when that finally happens.

People keep waiting for "the thing," some kind of bright line that makes it all clear. There's already blood in the water. Clarity isn't coming anytime soon.

This is why most of us Canadians know better than to talk shit about the Chaos Dragon.

I’ve received multiple death threats + doxing (including my home address) directly following harassment from Turning Point USA, Jack Posobiec, Andy NGO, + Fox News which called me an antifa ‘financier.’

I have been forced to move my classes online.

If journalists want to talk, DM me or reply here.
