NEW: When Propecy Fails is one of the most famous social psychology books of all time, a look at a small group of UFO believers when the “spacemen” failed to land. I wrote about a new study from an independent researcher who says the book is not what it seems. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
It’s one of the most influential social psychology studies ever. Was it all a lie?
A classic book on UFO believers and their "cognitive dissonance" after aliens failed to land is called into question.

It is unacceptable that this dude was allowed in leftist spaces. Some people are really twisting the concept of "popular front" & "big tent" if they're gonna allow the fascists into the bar. And not just a fascist, a fucking accelerationist genocidal tankie.

Okay, so news cycle finally seems (relatively) slow, so I'm going to finally do some promotion for my book.

I read many hundreds of books and articles in drafting Did The Science Wars Take Place? and a lot of delicious quotes or examples didn't make it in...

the parts of our evolved cognitive architecture -- and some individuals' personalities in particular -- that contribute to classical forms of magical thinking do not simply evaporate when religious identity does, even if norms associated with some religious identities do facilitate magical thinking
a good bit of the pathology attributed to 'religion' in the abstract is basically pathology associated with the psychology of social identity processes and the evolved psychology of coalitions; religion is a social identity & a basis for coalitions but it is hardly the only one
The decline of religion as a source of meaning in people's lives remains underrated as a factor shaping society. The need doesn't go away - they just seek it out elsewhere in (often false) health/wellness beliefs, (often highly polarized/conflictual) politics, etc. www.nytimes.com/2025/11/25/o...

What it's strange that everyone commenting on this seems to miss is that this obsession of Thiel is a direct response to Bostrom's argument that we should stop technology (AI) by building a global totalitarian state.

Thiel is viewing the entire world through the lens of the rationalist civil war.
He claims the default political solution people have for existential risks is one world governance. Isn't that weird, how when we have global issues we think hey maybe some global cooperation would be the best way to address global issues. You want nuclear nonproliferation? Antichrist.

I look forward when we have better alternatives than this braindead slopulism ("if ignorant, mean people like it then we must do it") and neo-elitism ("Bring Back Gatekeeping, you must get this much on a standardized test to have an opinion")
There's a particularly noxious strain of implicit populism running through these discussions, left and centre (tho in slightly different ways), which simply cannot conceive of bad ideas emerging from or thriving in an authentic, grassroots, democratic and/or radical space.

For the life of me, I will never understand those on social media who hear "[some bad take] is common in the left" and immediately leap to "that's not true; this person is making it up; they're just tilting at some irrelevant single tweet"

Who doesn't understand how common bad takes are?

A supposedly reputable journalist monetizing his mortifying diary entries about his fiancée cucking him with the worst Kennedy behind a paywall is truly the most 2025 thing possible.
The bamboo metaphor is back: Ryan Lizza has dropped Part 2.

Below are the opening paragraphs, but most of it is behind a paywall.

(My apologies in advance.)

Even by the standards of crypto, Tether is a next-level scam. It was literally created as fake dollars to make the exchange seem solvent. The whole thing has been one of the biggest ongoing scandals in the crypto world for many years (and that's saying something!)
