American cities, for all their flaws, present an actually existing, multicultural alternative to MAGA's small, hateful and indeed adolescent worldview. And that is why Trump is going to war with them. www.salon.com/2025/10/02/t...
Trump's war on cities is part of his ugly vision for America
The U.S. president is declaring war on cities because they represent a positive, multicultural alternative to MAGA.

Prodigy Internet. Dial-up that went out whenever my older brother's friends called. No streaming video. Who knew that was the Golden Age?

Scholars of America say visiting the US is too risky. In Vienna they likened Trump’s authoritarian turn to Russia and China, citing student detentions, deportation threats, device warnings, and conferences relocating abroad.
"Too risky": Scholars who study America say they won't visit
At a recent panel in Vienna, academics who study America said the country has become similar to Russia and China.

"The list includes Soros' Open Society Foundations; ActBlue, the funding arm of the Democratic Party; Indivisible, a grassroots coalition opposed to Trump policies and the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights, a Los Angeles-based group."

President Donald Trump's threatened crackdown on the finances and activities of liberal non-profits and groups opposed to his agenda is a multi-agency effort with top White House aide Stephen Miller playing a central role, according to officials.

At a recent panel in Vienna, academics who study in America said it was now "too risky" to visit, comparing it to the likes of China and Russia.

"Thank God for Canada," said one. www.salon.com/2025/10/09/t...

American pedant: “I’m not sure, of all historical examples, given our own history of homegrown, right-wing extremism, about comparisons to mid-20th century European fascism, particularly given…”

Incredible.

Jack Posobiec references the earliest version of antifa -- the anti-fascists in the Weimar Republic who were opposed to the Nazi Party -- as the bad guys.

The anti-DEI anti-woke movement has always been transparently white supremacist. Nonetheless, moves like canceling a game about the Klan being the bad guys really drives home the point.

SCOOP: Last year, Ubisoft cancelled an Assassin's Creed game set during Reconstruction. Was to feature a Black Assassin who, among other things, fought the rise of the Klan

Sources: Leadership nixed it over concerns re: U.S. political climate, backlash to Yasuke

"It definitely keeps me up at night," Janessa Goldbeck of the Vet Voice Foundation told me, speaking about the prospect of a deadly incident. But what scares her, long term, is that this is about normalizing troops in the streets — and at polling stations — for the 2026 midterms.

With his DC troop deployments, Trump is creating the conditions for another Kent State — and potentially undermining future elections, experts told me. www.salon.com/2025/08/20/v...

Incompetent is the confounding part, here: Oh it's a dumb question? Then you should able to knock it out of the park! Pivot to your talking points! Be a professional!

Any woman in public life is of course going to be subjected to a sexist double standard, and we should be aware of that, but for me 1) the interviewer here is a woman 2) it’s very easy to imagine a man in this scenario because Donald Trump is president

My on-the-record Take is that Cruz is trying not to appear as a Huge Free Speech Hypocrite — uhh, the Kimmel thing should make us support Facebook monetizing COVID disinformation — while actually doing nothing to address the present administration’s assault on the 1st Amendment.

Prove me wrong!
charliearchy.bsky.social
Thin on details, but this appears to have nothing to with the FCC and Kimmel — Cruz spun his removal as a private business decision — and is more about suing because Facebook took down your post on how MAGAoil cures COVID.

Porter’s behavior here is pathetic. And not that it’s perfect, but: 95% of American politicians could not withstand 5 minutes of questioning on the BBC.

Someone who used to work with Katie Porter sent me this clip from a train wreck interview with her and said “now imagine what she’s like when there aren’t cameras around.”

Glenn Greenwald, presently befriending Nick Fuentes, was able to confuse a few too many left-wing podcasters, for a decade, by suggesting he had arrived at "supporting Donald J. Trump on Rumble.com" by reading Noam Chomsky.

DHS’s Tricia McLaughlin had claimed “one of the drivers who rammed the law enforcement vehicle was armed with a semi-automatic weapon.”

In court, prosecutors conceded that no weapon was brandished.

This quote from Engels, writing to Marx during the US Civil War, lives in my head: www.marxists.org/archive/marx...
"As far as the relationship, man to man, is concerned, there is no question that physically and morally the people of the North are considerably superior to those of the South. The combativeness of the Southerner is combined to an appreciable extent with the cowardice of the assassin. Every man goes about armed, but only to be able to down his adversary in a quarrel before the latter expects the attack."

Oregon Republicans know they can't use an image of the actual (small, tame) protest in Portland to illustrate Trump's fever dream and their fake intel, so they had to make one from stock photos of South American "Policia" leaning on riot shields + what looks like Brazilian football fans with flares

If we were living under fascism, none of you would be here daring to post things. You'd be erasing your social media accounts and keeping your head down; you'd know that peacocking your faux-bravery on a network would expose you to being disappeared.
You have no idea what "fascism" really means.

the regime is zip tying toddlers and ripping them away from their mothers unclothed... calling it fascism upsets this neo-con.
