Hello! I'm a legal historian specializing in immigration & First Amendment law/history. Unfortunately, my research & writing on ideological exclusion/deportation (1798 to Trump 1.0) continues to be relevant. I post on current events, immigration, free speech, & history. Also post my 📸, 🎧🎵, 🎬 recs. 🗃️

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

Donald Trump is not a king — and his administration is not above the law.

Today, the court confirmed what we all know: there is no credible evidence of a rebellion in the state of Illinois.

And no place for the National Guard in the streets of American cities like Chicago.

Perry says the order will say defendants are "temporarily enjoined from ordering the federalization and deployment of the National Guard of the United States within Illinois."

Yesterday, The Intercept sent a letter to Judge Young, asking him to clarify that certain materials he cited in his ruling are no longer under seal. This includes Homeland Security Investigations reports and State Dept memos about Mahmoud Khalil and others. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

This is nothing more than a continuation of the president’s desperate weaponization of our justice system.

I am not fearful — I am fearless.

We will fight these baseless charges aggressively, and my office will continue to fiercely protect New Yorkers and their rights..

New York AG Tish James says the charges filed against her by Trump’s DOJ “are baseless, and the president’s own public statements make clear that his only goal is political retribution at any cost.”

“The president’s actions are a grave violation of our Constitutional order…”

New by me for @lawfaremedia.org: The possible case against Letitia James reflects Trump’s modus operandi of responding to perceived offenses against him not just tit for tat, but tat for tat. He treats others the exact same way he claims they’ve mistreated him. www.lawfaremedia.org/article/next...
Next Up: Letitia James
It’s hard to imagine a worse case than the one against James Comey—until you see the one against the attorney general of New York.

In 1972, the Nixon administration attempted to deport popular British musician John Lennon from the US.

Lennon was an outspoken critic of Nixon & the Vietnam War.

Lennon & atty Leon Wildes challenged his deportation & won.

Lennon received his green card in 1976.

New — I was fortunate to speak in front of students and faculty at Grinnell College in Iowa tonight about the business of independent journalism, the current state of media under Trump 2.0, and billionaire control.

I published my full speech because I thought it might resonate beyond campus:
Truth, morality and independence in journalism under the second Trump regime
My full remarks to students and faculty at Grennell College.
