What they are asking for is what Stephen Miller means when he speaks of “federal immunity" -- complete immunity from any legal consequences. If SCSO wins, they will have the power to bring Los Angeles and Chicago to the Hamptons. @latinojustice.bsky.social intends to stop them.

In the article, the Sheriff’s Office says it has “immunity” for its actions. This isn’t the ordinary “qualified immunity” from @joannaschwartz. They have asked multiple courts to hold they have full federal "immunity from suit." No court has ruled they have even presented the question properly.

Right now, ICE is running rampant on the island. Last week they pinned a man under their car while “arresting” him.

Long Island is the Hamptons and grand estates, but it is also a destination for new arrivals - more than 30% of the residents of Nassau County speak a language other than English at home, which is why we’re suing the Nassau County PD for denying translations:
‘We speak English here': Nassau County Police sued for language access
The lawsuit claims Nassau County's police department has a written policy requiring officers to help non-native English speakers, but that many do not follow it in practice.

Nassau and Suffolk County are the eastern suburbs of New York City – where Robert Moses built the parkways to Jones Beach, Levittown, all of that. They are conservative places: despite the national shift, Trump’s ally Bruce Blakeman won election as the Nassau County executive handily.

Accepting there is wide variation in “shoes that cost $1,000,” I’m thinking more of the below, where the cost is unrelated to comfort/wear but a free-floating signal “I pay $1,000 for my shoes”.

The thousand dollar shoes do not last longer. Expensive shoes are fragile. That is the point. Posted needs to read Veblen.

The county will certainly appeal. They appealed in the middle of the case as well. We are confident in the jury’s verdict and will be ready to defend it. No one can predict what a future court will do.
