Accepting there is wide variation in “shoes that cost $1,000,” I’m thinking more of the below, where the cost is unrelated to comfort/wear but a free-floating signal “I pay $1,000 for my shoes”.
The thousand dollar shoes do not last longer. Expensive shoes are fragile. That is the point. Posted needs to read Veblen.
The county will certainly appeal. They appealed in the middle of the case as well. We are confident in the jury’s verdict and will be ready to defend it. No one can predict what a future court will do.
The situation in Florida is unbearable right now.

Anyway, AI doesn’t have any value for me in anything I do. I understand this says something about *what* I do. But also? It’s only practically existed for maybe 18 months. I loved and worked almost 45 years without it so yeah, I’m cool.
They will appeal and it could take time to resolve. The verdict was today. Justice is slow.
Part of it was Covid, but yes, justice takes too long.
Not what we are seeing now. This was ICE asking local jails to keep people beyond their release date for no reason other than ICE wanted to pick them up. Now there are so many ICE agents they can get people before their release date.
There were lawyers challenging the detentions at the time from @nyclu.org — they secured a release in 2018 and made the process stop. This was the damages case for those who were jailed.

This poster appeared at a bus stop near Tesla's flagship London store overnight… 👏🏼
No portion of this award goes to lawyers. We are a nonprofit. Winston was pro bono counsel.
Average of $166,000. More or less depending on length of detention. No portion of award goes to attorneys, who were at legal non profit (us) or pro bono firm.
This was based on detentions in 2016-18. Some are free, some were deported. Alas.
That’s true! Justice is slow (and Covid slowed further). But we aren’t going anywhere.
Probably without COVID it’s only six years. But these cases (damages, as opposed to emergency relief) are slow.
Not today. They will appeal. But we are ready.
We at @latinojustice.bsky.social are a legal nonprofit and never charge fees. Our law firm co-counsel were pro bono.

Lawsuit is from 2017 lawsuit against Suffolk County and its Sheriff for unlawfully holding people in county jails after posting their bail or resolving their cases, for the sole purpose of letting ICE take them into custody.
BREAKING: A federal jury in Brooklyn awarded our clients — 674 immigrants unlawfully jailed by the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office — $112 million. Could not be more proud to work at @latinojustice.bsky.social and to partner with the talent of Winston & Strawn.
