Alongside learning how to make ink, students and parents also had the opportunity this month to attend a workshop on medieval calligraphy, with our very own Dr. Twu!

Walnuts and thorn berries will play a crucial roll in creating the ink for the Book of The North. Last Thursday, we sat down with Dr. Twu to see how it’s made, from the tree to the page.
Dr. Twu also did some writing in Bâtarde, a font for use in the book, to test the ink to beautiful results.

From our very own Dr. Twu, some lessons on flax fibers and processing. These fibers will play a critical role in the crafting of the Book of The North. Using medieval techniques, flax and many other natural materials will be used in to create this symbol of Minnesotan culture and ecology.

Last Friday, volunteers and members of the Book of The North team took to the wetlands in northern Minnesota to harvest nettles for the project! These nettles will play an important part in creating the ink.

When you think of Book of The North, obviously you think of…geometry?

Yesterday, Dr. Twu visited some geometry classes at Duluth East High School for a special lesson on the geometry of medieval books!

Armed with only a straightedge and a compass, these students found Jan Tschichold golden canon of page construction! Ever wondered why so many medieval pages looked small? It was because they could make all the pages symmetrical with no measurements!

Genuine fake news
I spoke to the person who AI-generated the Chicago Sun-Times reading list. Says he's very embarrassed. This was part of a generic package inserted into newspapers and other publications, so likely to run elsewhere. He didn't know it'd be in Chicago Sun-Times

"I can't believe I missed it because it's so obvious. No excuses," the writer said. "I'm completely embarrassed."

Bizarre. More proof that blurbs need to be entirely rethought in publishing circles
The AI book list and general enshittification reminded me that I've been credited as blurbing hundreds of books I never have, including books by Patti Smith, Amy Tan, Sidney Sheldon, Joyce Maynard, and Elmore Leonard? And I can't get these fake blurbs taken off publisher and bookstore websites?

You cannot take these pundits seriously. Chris Cuomo was just railing against Columbia and tax dollars and elite this and that. He went to private school K-12 and attended Yale. Any of these conservatives or moderates who don’t talk about their own schooling first should be ignored.
