Just finished and enjoyed biography of 1930s England and Northants opener Fred Bakewell Among the Bright Colours by Mick Pope. Interesting character - no bitterness about his truncated career. Well worth a read

There have been no Test players with the surnames Temple, Ramsey, Coggan, Runcie or Welby.
acscricket.bsky.social
Randall Davidson and George Carey shared theirs with Australians (in both cases the player didn't make his Test debut until well after the archbishop had left office - albeit neither with as long a gap as Hutton), but in general there has not been much overlap between the groups.

Sarah Mullally is (or will be when formally installed) the first Archbishop of Canterbury to share her surname with anyone who played multiple Tests for England since Matthew Hutton in 1758. More recently Geoffrey Fisher and Rowan Williams shared theirs with one Test wonders.

Today's game makes Anne-Marie Garth (Ireland 1988) and daughter Kim (Australia 2025) the first mother and daughter to have played at Women's Cricket World Cups.

The 15th and final round of the County Championship, in late September, was the only one without a single draw in its nine matches.
(The teams play 14 matches each, but in late April/early May take it in turns to sit out one round to give the players a break.)

NB this refers to Tests only - since Adil Rashid (b1988) is still playing for them in the shorter formats.

This marks the end of a generation for England: barring something extraordinary, we've seen the last time a player born in the 1980s has played a Test for them.

There are quite a few such players still active for other countries - Zimbabwe alone have five.

Completely up to you! There's no entrance exam and we don't check a bibliography to see how many books a potential member has written. An interest in cricket history and/or statistics is all you need, there's no requirement to be actively researching them yourself.

15 September marks 50 years since Chris Balderstone scored 51 no for Leicestershire v Derbyshire, played for Doncaster v Brentford in the evening, and then completed his 100 next day and took 3 wickets as Leics won the championship. A proper shift @acscricket.bsky.social @anniechave.bsky.social

All three totals were records at the time, although the latter two have since been surpassed.
acscricket.bsky.social
England's highest totals across formats in recent years have aggregated 1,625 (823+498+304), although no-one featured in all three. Sri Lanka totalled 1,655 with the same player top scoring in all: Sanath Jayasuriya made 340 out of 952 in a Test, 157 out of 443 in an ODI and 88 out of 260 in a T20I.

OK this latest press release from the ICC has seriously pissed me off.

The VERY FIRST World Cup in 1973 was entirely umpired by women.

Maybe pause a minute from puffing yourselves up to read a history book? (I can recommend a good one... 😂)

www.icc-cricket.com/media-releas...
This marks the first time in tournament history that a Women’s Cricket World Cup will be officiated entirely by women, a feat made possible by the ICC’s work across many years to support, elevate and empower women in cricket.
