Related to this, some English speakers (at least the immature ones like me) found it amusing when Taffel described a competition bag of crisps as "Kisapussi"

I guess this also belongs in this thread...

Several businesses in Germany have hiring posters that say "we're looking for you." In German that phrase is "wir suchen dich," which could be mistaken for an English phrase with a somewhat different meaning.

In 2012, an Icelandic newspaper translated an interview where Jessica Biel said that Justin Timberlake excels at everything he does. The translation went a bit wrong though and the article said that Timberlake was constantly using Microsoft Excel (the headline read "Can't live without Excel files")

One last one for the road (my apologies as this thread has gone on far too long)...

Oh, and I probably shouldn’t exclude the (totally legitimate) language of meme from this thread…

An old Swedish idiom for someone who isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer is hjulet snurrar men hamstern är död. It means “the wheel is spinning but the hamster is dead.”

* this is, of course, also the title of one of my books (and did I mention it makes the PERFECT last-minute Christmas gift?)
December 19, 2025 at 12:44 PM
Again, this isn't quite the same thing as the other clips in the thread, but I'm adding it in anyway...

In Aussie slang “do a Bradbury” describes a surprise / lucky victory. In 2002, Aussie skater Steven Bradbury got to the semis of the Winter Olympics because the world champion was disqualified. Bradbury then won the semi when everyone in front of him fell over (which then also happened in the final)

Just because Christmas is around the corner and I happen to have a book that makes the PERFECT gift, doesn’t mean you’ll find me shamelessly hawking my wares on here. I’m better than that. In other news, here's a promo for The Wheel is Spinning but the Hamster is Dead (available here - geni.us/yDxa)

Just been reminded of the Coldplay vs Turtle clip and while it's not quite the same concept as the other videos in this thread, I'm adding it anyway...

What was your version of eeny, meeny, miney, moe (counting game for choosing or eliminating someone) when you were younger? The best one I've heard is from Czech, which has several different endings but this is my favourite (image on the left is the original Czech, on the right is rough translation)

Happy National Poetry Day! There's a poem by Austrian poet Ernst Jandl that tells the story of Otto and his naughty pug using no vowels other than O. The image on the left shows the original in German. It doesn't translate that well to English but there's a clumsy attempt in the image on the right.
