And I also had the pleasure in helping to award the @casaucl.bsky.social prize for spatial analysis, in memory of Sinesio Alves Junior, with @adamdennett.bsky.social and other CASA researchers, to the well deserving @chris-larkin.bsky.social for his PhD work on cycling and low traffic neighbourhoods

Thanks Alex! Oh, if only it were just a lottery for over subscription. It's way more crazy! We've got a visual explainer on our webpage here (half way down - also in the video) - www.parentsupport.group - essentially a policy to deliberately displace hundereds kids from their local schools.

A massive storm is brewing in Brighton over the council's barmy plans for secondary schools. I've been looking at the evidence, latest stuff here - adamdennett.github.io/BH_Schools_C... - I know @fionamillar.bsky.social has written about previous experiments - intriguing political dimension too!

In the old days (i.e. 2001 Census when I was working on that) they applied a 'small-cell-perturbation' methodology which randomly swapped all flows of 1&2 with 0&3. Let to lots of very dodgy flows at small area. Looks like it could be an evolution of that. @oliverdw.bsky.social will know the answer!

#30DayMapChallenge, Day 19: Typography. Let me show you a lil project I've been simmering for a while, looking at the quantity of roads named for aristocrats, from kings and queens to the lowliest earl. Turns out there's loads of them in London (though Bar-king is skewing the data a _touch_)

Apparently my mug made the front page of the Argus - but it wasn't me at the restaurant, guv! Nope, some real-life urban analytics in the wild and a policy dust-up with the council. Made a deputation with the incredible support of the most amazing group of parents, which is what the article covers.

Yeah, not seen it yet either - looks ace! And by track 3, I was back at Warning in the Cambridge Junction in about 2002, walking into the main room, preparing to dance my brains out until reality intervened again at some point the next day!

How much?! Ffs! If we charged that for CUPUM we'd be able to retire to a tropical island! Well, assuming more than 1 very rich person turned up, which is the more likely scenario!

Favourite thing I've written in my academic career to date, out today - a brief history of UK beer taxation & its impact on the London beer scene. link.springer.com/chapter/10.1... - in the new #GeographiesOfBeer book. Expert analysis by Kuba Wyszomierski and data harvesting by @frogo.bsky.social

Fascinating chart - thanks! So the dampening effect of increased supply far outstripped by demand fuelled by income and availability of credit. Really interesting that - and I guess tenure shift towards ownership really supercharging the effect further

Even though we're lagging behind, dwellings per person still on an upward trend since the 1960s - which begs the question why affordability is so much worse? Some mix of unequal distribution, tenure issues and a poor dwelling / household match (old retirees in massive family homes, etc.)?

Ooh, this is like old twitter - that's more like it! :)
