Today's #connections #webgame has a nice rainbow round (a gotcha/bonus category, unrelated to the true categories, which features one item from each group; this is my own term).

It's quite clever (and obscure—ConnectionsBot says it fooled 1% of all players and it's not in the top 30 errors) […]

This #webgame was particularly difficulty today. (I recommend doing the Daily Extreme after warming up on other #Quordle puzzles since the Extreme has so few chances and such extensive vocabulary.)
Quordle
Put your skills to the test and solve four words at once! You have 9 guesses to solve all four words. A new Quordle available each day to solve.

Some currently-illegal concepts, despite the moral dilemmas surrounding them, need to be legal simply because their illegality is _significantly_ more problematic than decriminalization. At the top of the list: recreational drugs, abortion, and prostitution. We need to look at the larger picture […]

Am amateur cryptographer may have just identified the Zodiac Killer (who would also have been responsible for the Black Dahlia killings):

An amateur sleuth claims to have cracked the Black Dahlia and Zodiac killings
A codebreaker is claiming to have solved the Zodiac killer’s long-unsolved identity — and, in the process, to have linked the murders to the killing of Elizabeth Short, known as the Black...

This thread is a great way to end the year. It's not political and not bad news, just wholesome lunacy of the best kind.

This guy made the best counterfeit US cash the Secret Service had seen in 25 years. The article has a nice shirt documentary interviewing him. Yes, he shares some of his methods.
https://www.yahoo.com/news/counterfeit-money-actually-works-according-204204316.html
How counterfeit money actually works, according to a former forger
Jeff Turner counterfeited over $1 million in US currency. He forged the 1996-series $100 bill and later the 2013 "blue note." He was indicted on federal conspiracy charges in 2019 and cooperated with the Secret Service, eventually serving 10 months in prison. According to Turner, the Secret Service said the bills he was manufacturing were the highest quality they'd seen in over 25 years. Turner speaks to Insider about the materials and processes required to make fake money. He talks through how to spot a fake bank note. He also discusses cartel forgeries and the "supernotes" the US has accused North Korea of making. Nowadays, Turner works as a printer in Knoxville, Tennessee. He speaks about spotting fakes and frauds on his YouTube channel.

Chavarria, a U.S. citizen, was held at the airport "for more than four hours and released only after he finally agreed to let the agents search his smartphone, tablet, and laptop computer. There is no such thing as a device that can "find" cameras or GPS sensors because they're passive: they don't emit anything (Air Tags etc do, so they can be detected, but they're also ~responsibly engineered that way to prevent spying).

I had a new experience today at dinner. The guy two tables down, who had a quiet gentle voice, was gesticulating so wildly that it shook the bench we were both seated on. While I appreciated the softness of his speech, his hands and arms were basically yelling.
