W. David Marx on art today: “Even in a so-called populist era, a small cadre of celebrities continues to define what is possible, desirable, and righteous.…culture became a lowest-common-denominator battle for attention.…infamy and esteem become indistinguishable.”

Trump on Taiwan. If any other president of any party had said this, congressional Republicans would be flipping out.

Hegseth wants to punish Sen. Mark Kelly for "counsel[ing] members of the Armed Forces to refuse lawful orders."

But Kelly & co. were crystal clear in talking exclusively about ILLEGAL orders.

If anyone here has a record of confusion about legal vs. illegal orders, it's Hegseth himself.

There's a moment when the Empire State Building is projected onto the Washington Monument. My 10-year-old joked that the Empire State Building should return the favor, showing the Washington Monument in the lights of its windows.

In 1957, the tabloid Reveille published a life-size cut-out of Brigitte Bardot, as shown in this hilariously horny Getty image. (Apparently, teenaged John Lennon had this on the ceiling above his bed.)

Relatable. #BrigitteBardot

More on "BB": "In 1969, [Brigitte Bardot] became the first celebrity to be used as the model for Marianne, a [previously anonymous] traditional symbol of the French Republic that adorns town halls across the country."

Remember when Republicans recorded themselves reading Dr. Seuss stories b/c of "cancel culture"? They were unhappy his estate had stopped publishing books with racist bits.

But the Republicans were terrible Seuss readers!

All of which is just an excuse to brag that I'm a truly great Grinch reader.

Over on X, a post with sad personal news from Ben Sasse, the Republican former senator from Nebraska.

There are so many great lines in 'Scrooged,' but this little throwaway—"I just want to say: Break a leg, everybody. I feel real weird about tonight"—gets me every time...

One final update/correction, based on what I'm seeing in the most recent Getty pictures: The workers seem *not* to have removed the first "The" before JFK's name. So it now reads—very weirdly—"The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts."
December 19, 2025 at 9:37 PM
A little update: I guess we now know—from the words added, and from the "The" being removed—what the Kennedy Center will now say above its main doors: "The Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts."
December 19, 2025 at 6:44 PM
HOLY HELL, the Trump name is already going up on the Kennedy Center, right now.

When I drove past it yesterday to grab a picture, I saw a Getty photographer taking some shots. That photographer—Heather Diehl—is back this morning, and she has been filing images of the Trump name going up.

I knew as soon as Trump took over the Kennedy Center board that the writing was on the wall (figuratively) and the writing would soon be on the wall (literally): that Trump would rename the Kennedy Center after himself.

Here's what it looked like at 2:30 p.m. today from my car.

This really is, as Sara says, INSANE memory-holing: Minutes after FCC Chairman Carr told Congress that the FCC "is not" an independent agency (see video below via @atrupar.com), the FCC website started getting scrubbed to remove that description.

A tweet from @stephenking.bsky.social about Rob Reiner, who directed 'Stand by Me' (based on one of King's finest works, the novella 'The Body') and 'Misery' (based on King's novel of that name), and who named his production company, Castle Rock Entertainment, after King's fictional Maine town.
