📢 For anyone working on the #ICC’s investigation in the Philippines and the prosecution of former President Rodrigo Duterte over crimes against humanity committed during his so-called drug war, this special issue is looking for folks to write on just that! 👇

Yes, and elephant in the room is this is really about Russia, Wagner and atrocities under three military juntas
adamkochanski.bsky.social
A little more surprised than I should be by Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger announcement to withdraw from #ICC, labelling it an "instrument of neo-colonialist repression" and saying they will pursue "indigenous mechanisms for the consolidation of peace and justice." www.bbc.com/news/article...
Three West African countries to quit International Criminal Court
The three military juntas, who came to power through coups, say the judicial body is 'incapable' of handling 'proven war crimes'.

UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel finds that Israel has committed genocide in the Gaza Strip. Excellent summary of the key findings of the report below:
janinadill.bsky.social
The three most damning paras in the UN Report alleging that Israel is perpetrating genocide in Gaza: Siege starvation, attacks on health care, direct targeting of children as patterns that cannot be explained except if group destruction is one animating purpose.

“And if people want to have fun on the high seas or the low seas.” Lordy, he thinks “high seas” is the water level and doesn’t know it refers to international waters. 🤦‍♂️

Trump: "When I see boats coming in like loaded up the other day with all sorts of drugs -- probably fentanyl mostly -- we're gonna take them out. And if people wants to have fun on the high seas of the low seas they're gonna be in trouble."

U.S. withdrew its signature from the Rome Statute of the ICC in 2002 & has no legal obligation arising from its signature. That being said, any sensible state should arrest and extradite. BUT, it’s been long-standing U.S. policy to not recognize the ICC’s jurisdiction & I don’t see that changing.

“No lawful measure can be eschewed in the effort to induce Israel to allow Gaza to be flooded with humanitarian assistance, to restore essential services, and to provide the conditions for the sustained, long-term recovery needs of Palestinians in Gaza.”

Time Has Run Out: Mass Starvation in Gaza and the Global Imperative
It is time for comprehensive, full-spectrum, sustainable, and coordinated humanitarian action. States globally must act without delay on that imperative.

The man-made starvation in #Gaza is horrific, inhumane and a blatant violation of the ICJ’s provisional measures ruling and the fundamental principles of #IHL. All restrictions on humanitarian aid must be lifted without delay. Access to food and water are protected under IHL, without exception.

Back in Toronto after spending last five weeks in Frankfurt at @goetheuni.bsky.social as a @trace-center.de Visiting Fellow. Huge thanks to Lisbeth Zimmermann and others in the Chair on International Institutions and Peace Processes for hosting me and stimulating discussions about IR norms research.

Very pleased to hear announcement of an "immediate and unconditional" ceasefire in Thailand-Cambodia fighting and a pledge to return to normalcy. Also significant to see ASEAN chair Malaysia mediating and brokering the ceasefire, voicing "shared commitment to peace, dialogue and regional stability."

Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to an “immediate and unconditional” ceasefire in their escalating border dispute after talks in neighboring Malaysia, that country’s prime minister announced. wapo.st/4f7ITY9

The clashes between #Thailand and #Cambodia are very concerning. At least 33 killed, thousands displaced and reports of a Thai hospital being shelled and use of cluster munitions by Thai military. Need for immediate de-escalation to offset possibility of full-on war.
adamkochanski.bsky.social
Trump caught lying again. He’s threatened Thailand and Cambodia with 36% tariffs and has diminished the U.S.’s credibility here. When a ceasefire does inevitably happen, I expect it will be because of an #ASEAN third party involvement - most likely Malaysia.
nytimes.com
Fighting flared between Thai and Cambodian troops along the two countries’ disputed border early Sunday despite President Trump saying that the leaders of both countries had agreed to a cease-fire the previous day.
Thailand and Cambodia Trade Fire Despite Cease-Fire Promises
President Trump said on Saturday that both countries had agreed to a halt in the fighting. But on Sunday morning, skirmishes erupted once more.

Tensions have boiled over in a months-long standoff between #Thailand and #Cambodia in a disputed area along their border. The standoff has escalated with military clashes, resulting in 9 civilian deaths in Thailand's Surin province - the deadliest clash between the two #ASEAN countries since 2011.
