Easily one of the best concerts I've ever been to. Tonight was my 3rd live show of My Morning Jacket. Jim James, Patrick Hallahan (also did an awesome one-off album with other artists called Spanish Gold), & rest of the band were phenomenal. The technicals & sound engineering were peak. Love & hope.

Yeah I'm going to be counting the days I manage to keep this alive

Yep this will be my challenge since I've only had succulents and a pothos so far. It's also in a spot that won't get as much sunlight as the garden center I bought it from.

Here's the new addition to my plant stand by my window: a small African Violet from Nall's Produce! I needed a pop of color in the room. I'll try repotting into a bigger pot soon.

HUGE variety of pumpkins, gourds, and other plants at Nall's Produce in Springfield. I bought a bunch of ornamental gourds for a windowsill decoration and an African Violet for my plant stand.

The Columbia Pike bike boulevards are meh. The County proposed a plan to improve them which falls short - it would leave the boulevards with too many cars to be safe for bikes & still wouldn't connect people biking to the Pike.

I may be biased, but D.C. is my pick for #4.
⚠️ Spoiler: our embattled city does come out as #5 on Ray's list, so if this was expanded to a "Top 5" list of major cities there should be consensus about being included. I do like the number 5 for everything, anyway.

A setback for more environmentally-friendly high-rise mass timber construction in the US. Especially for housing. Tariffs and inflation are the claimed source of problems, but others have pointed out mismanagement and contractor issues for the Milwaukee project, too.
"Tallest mass timber building in the world" halted due to tariffs
Local developer Neutral has recently stated that construction on its mass timber Edison skyscraper in Milwaukee has been halted due to rising tariffs

This isn't simply paraphrasing by Nolan. It's an actual quote from the mayor of Laguna Hills as the council gnash their teeth and wail as they approve 180 units of housing. California's new housing laws are working.
mnolangray.bsky.social
“If we fight [the 180-unit senior-focused development] outright, we’d invite lawsuits from the attorney general, advocacy groups and many others ... and we simply cannot risk bankrupting Laguna Hills and draining our city’s funds.” Laws change, housing gets built. ❤️

Council members reluctantly approved the development to comply with state mandates and avoid potentially costly lawsuits.

In a few days I'll be interviewing Chuck Bean, fmr Executive Director of @mwcog.bsky.social, on leadership and his experience running MWCOG. What would you like to see asked? What leadership challenges or programs do you want to learn more about?

I'm about to take a break from the #yimbysofnova booth to go grab some of this great food!

UBLIC SPACES Homes for All Assembly
A grassroots action to show our power to elected leaders
Sunday, October 19, 2025 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM Floris United Methodist Church, 13600 Frying Pan Rd, Herndon, VA 20171
**We are arranging carpool groups** https://actionnetwork.org/events/homes-for-all-voice-assembly
This is a critical moment for housing justice in Virginia. With the 2026 General Assembly and gubernatorial election on the horizon, we are joining with VOICE, our key ally in the Commonwealth Housing Coalition, to demand bold statewide action to address the housing shortage and unlock opportunity for all.
This action will be a powerful display of people power-lifting up the voices of diverse faith communities and allies supporting housing champions at the local and state level, united around a shared vision of housing abundance.
We need every YIMBY in the room to show the depth and breadth of our movement. Your presence will send a clear message to candidates and elected officials: the time for tweaks is over-we're organizing for transformation and building the pressure to make housing a defining issue in 2025 and beyond.

#columbiapike businesses are really struggling - the construction is creating huge challenges - consider focusing your eat out/take out/grab a coffee/ get lunch/ get a pie/ play pinball energy on #columbiapike businesses. If you want places to stay it really is time to support.

I also don't have a direct stake in the SB race, but I voted to protect trans students and uphold science education, so my choice was clear.

Get it done now, folks! I just voted early for Virginia Gov, Lt Gov, AG, Delegate, School Board, and Arlington County Board, which I continue to love #RankedChoiceVoting for. Early voting available at the county's Ellen M. Bozman Government Center from 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday.

Getting some ice cream at Jeni's in Shirlington to benefit EcoAction Arlington. The proceeds go to the local charity through 6pm, so only one hour left to treat yourself for a good cause!

rewatching NETWORK for a project 👀 and it is absolutely shocking how prescient this film is. it’s like paddy chayefsky was granted a vision of america in 2025 and he furiously tried to turn what he saw into something intelligible to viewers in the 1970s

Car-centric design hurts people in small towns just like in big cities.

I saw this old lady cross this busy road on her walker because the direct trip (nursing home to Tim Horton’s) was 100 metres, versus 1 kilometre to walk up the road, cross at a light, and come back.

Town of 1,200 in Ontario.

George Gerbner: "...association with television viewing is a heightened sense of living in a “mean world” of violence and danger. Fearful people are more dependent, more easily manipulated and controlled, more susceptible to deceptively simple, strong, tough measures and hard-line postures..."

Also reading about George Gerbner & "Cultivation Analysis": people who watch too much TV losing touch with reality.

"... people who regularly consumed local television news perceived themselves as being more afraid of and having higher risk of being a victim of crime."

Another tool of fascists.
adamtheo.com
Doing some textbook reading for a class and came across one of the most powerful tools for fascists. They rely on people's inherent drive to self-censor our public opinions based on what we think is popular or the majority opinion. This "Spiral of Silence" keeps good people quiet.
Spiral of Silence
Originally proposed by German political scientist Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann in 1974, Spiral of silence is the term meant to refer to the tendence of people to remain silent when they feel that their…
