Totally agree. Getting an ebike changed not only the way I get around atlanta, but my experience and relationship with the city, for the much better to be clear. Ebikes are revolutionary while EVs are a small (but important) shift in the current system.

By me this week - the happiest thing I've got to report of late, with a glorious trip over the summer to Montreal

"Forget EVs. Cycling is revolutionising transport."

Table For One Please.

Happy to hear this billboard is still up in Vancouver, was a pleasure to work with @visionzerovancouver.ca.
side of a building with a billboard that says smoking tables next to non-smoking tables used to be normal too and picture of child biking beside a truck on painted bike lane

Yep. Police refused to talk to the public about this
bikegillian.bsky.social
Another reason this ticket would be absolute bs

@arlingtonvapd.bsky.social once stopped and issued a warning to a woman biking on Marshall for not riding on the right when the woman was avoiding this grate

They are really uneducated about biking around Arlington and it makes all of us who bike less safe.

The Columbia Pike bike boulevards are meh. The County proposed a plan to improve them which falls short - it would leave the boulevards with too many cars to be safe for bikes & still wouldn't connect people biking to the Pike.

Speak up now to demand better

Oh, man, I want to be thanked for my advocacy when we have a win for safe and sustainable transportation in Arlington

Or I'd just like a big win for safe & sustainable transportation in Arlington

Thank you @theurbanist.org @seattletru.bsky.social @sngreenways.bsky.social @transpochoices.bsky.social and every volunteer and advocate fighting for better mobility, connection, and safety on our streets. This is a shared win and something to celebrate.

Side note: the graphics @arlingtondes.bsky.social is proposing for the bike boulevards are boring.

They should take a note from the Happy Wheels Network and have fun with it!

New episode up! We talked with researcher Tim Gill about how we need to make our cities safe for children, not cars. "Children are basically living very captive and kind of contained lives, and that's just not healthy."

Spoiler alert: @arlingtondes.bsky.social 's proposed designs do little to make the bike boulevards safer and do almost nothing to connect the blvds to the Pike

Definitely! Send me some times and we'll find one that works

people over 30 quote this with some life advice for the rest of us?

I guess I'm asking what principles do the networks for each mode need to follow to allow for this?
bikegillian.bsky.social
Every school, community center, library, hospital, major commercial district should be served by transit, walking & biking
bikegillian.bsky.social
The Complete Transit Network should include:

1) increased service in denser areas

2) stops with seating and protection from elements

3) efficient, easy to understand routes

4) transit signal priority

5) not required more than 2 transfers
bikegillian.bsky.social
The Safe & Comfortable Biking Network should have routes that have:

1) separation from cars if there are more than a modest # of cars or if speeds are high

2) > 12' wide

3) adequate ramps/transitions

4) Signalized crossings of all major roads

5) parallel routes at least every 1/2 mile
bikegillian.bsky.social
I'll start

The Safe & Comfortable Walking Network should have routes that have:

1) separation from cars, unless there are very few cars & speed is low, & bikes, if there are lots of bikes

2) > 3' wid3

3) Signalized crossings of all major roads

4) safe crossings at least every 1/4 mile

Are there any good resources for principles to guide development of a transportation network by mode

Or what principles would you suggest?
bikegillian.bsky.social
You know what's better than assigning a priority mode for a single street? Thinking through what a transportation network needs to look like to be useful, and then figuring how our streets can make that network happen.

These maps make it clear that street-firat planning doesn't get you a network
