Lawyer, former candidate, still fighting to flip VA-05 from red to blue. We can afford to live up to our values & build a society where we can all afford to live.

When I woke up yesterday morning, I believed that I was the best candidate to fight for and flip Virginia’s 5th District. By last night, I knew that I would be ending my campaign to endorse Tom Perriello. /1
Thinking back to when I was younger and people said not to have photos of yourself online in a swimsuit lest they been seen by creeps or future employers. How quaint. Now Grok will just undress you regardless.

“With President Trump running our country into disaster, no one here or there needs him trying to run Venezuela or trying to distract from his disastrous economic record by sending our soldiers into danger on false and unlawful pretenses.”
See below for my statement condemning Trump’s illegal and dangerous act of war in Venezuela:

Yet another way this administration is hurting rural communities and jeopardizing rural healthcare. Sloppy and careless policy (if I’m being charitable about the motives).
Rural America relies on foreign doctors. Trump’s visa fee shuts them out.
The Trump administration’s demand for companies to pay a $100,000 fee to hire an immigrant worker using an H-1B visa has created turmoil among rural health providers.

Usually when you do a deeper dive on legal questions, things get more complicated and nuanced. But the more I read about the boat strikes, the only added complexity is keeping track of all the layered ways in which they are likely murder.

If we’re quoting Rev. Jesse Jackson’s 1988 convention speech, this is the part I’d go with…
“We believe in a government that's a tool of our democracy in service to the public, not an instrument of the aristocracy in search of private wealth.”

Matt doesn’t mention that this comes after Rev. Jackson talks about taxing the rich and right before he talks about how shameful it is that we don’t provide affordable healthcare in this country. Here’s the clip, which I have watched many times.

After weaponizing the shutdown to block SNAP benefits for hungry people, the Trump Admin is using the oldest trick in the book to do more of the same.

This kind of red tape does nothing to prevent fraud — it just makes it harder for working people to get the benefits they need.
Trump administration will require SNAP participants to reapply for benefits
Food aid recipients are already required to recertify their information regularly. But the move is part of USDA chief Brooke Rollins’ effort to overhaul the program.

Newsletter: Results are still preliminary, but early numbers show Republicans lost ground in even some of the the reddest central Virginia counties.
Central Virginia's voter turnout tells a bigger story about who showed up for this year's election
"Republicans, I think, were not particularly enthusiastic about their candidates," said Jennifer Lawless, professor of politics at the University of Virginia.

Americans didn’t get affordable healthcare out of this deal, but some GOP senators got a provision likely to net each of them $500K or more. Note that *you* can’t sue under this provision if the government subpoenas *your* call logs without telling you. It’s a special treat for senators.
WATCH: @raskin.house.gov explains the deal that would allow eight GOP senators lucrative lawsuits over phone record subpoenas:

"It's certainly the most corrupt provision authorizing financial self-dealing and plunder of the public passed by Congress in this century."

Since I am asking to be elected to Congress, I want to be open about where I stand on this shutdown deal and why.

Thank you to veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice.

On this Veterans Day, I am thinking about how much our country owes to those who have served. Fighting to ensure that all veterans receive the respect, services, and opportunities they deserve is the least we can do.

Thank you to the Cville-Albemarle Dems for organizing this. Just want to bump up the link to donate online for those who weren’t able to make it yesterday.

The only labor and delivery unit in Farmville, VA, is closing in December. Why? Reasons include “recently enacted reductions in federal healthcare funding.”

Starting on Dec. 19, Farmville-area expectant parents will need to travel to Centra Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg — a roughly hour-long drive west.

Obviously a rough day yesterday for Rep. John McGuire, so he decided to send out an email blaming Democrats for the government shutdown. He reminds us that he has been supporting all those affected by the shutdown by visiting the private jet terminal at the Charlottesville airport.

Congratulations Zyahna! Colby and I were outside of Charlottesville High School tabling for Zyahna yesterday—it was such a joy to see the enthusiasm and get to be a tiny part of Zyahna's campaign. Lots of reasons for hope today.

John McGuire says he is going “all over the district.” In Charlottesville, this apparently means…visiting the private jet terminal at the Charlottesville airport?

1) Adele is my go-to friend for difficult questions/conflict.

And, inevitably, when I am stuck in my own perspective, Adele challenges me to see the other side.

It is easy in any conflict to believe the other side is unreasonable, but you can’t start there and expect to get anywhere.
