God, I love the microbars in Japan…

Yep, scrums worked fine for some people but it’s not surprising that when another option presents itself, others prefer it!

Some clubs but yeah, stickers definitely more common tbf!

Right! Conventions or knowledge about where to stand are harder to pick up if people in general aren’t going to pubs as much because they have other options, and most pubs have never gotten into the habit of making that stuff clear via signage etc

Which is partly why some clubs are banning smartphones!

Anyway, I rarely see queues at the pubs I go to, mostly because they aren’t that busy or they have unusual shapes that discourage queuing. It’s usually super busy Wetherspoons that I spot them at.

Understandable! I was OK at it but can’t say I enjoyed the process much

IMO the social function of pubs introducing strangers to one another was always debatable, but if the govt is going to give them special treatment for that reason, we really have to question whether the current design works at all in the era of smartphones

Maybe there’s a social anxiety component, maybe people aren’t into the risk/opportunity of chatting to randos at the bar while waiting. But that was probably going down anyway since everyone’s on their phones now.

You have to be on your toes in the scrum queue too, whereas a linear queue requires no thought or attention. In pre-smartphone days that’d be boring, but now people can just scroll while in line.

There are so many interesting factors! The traditional scrum-style queue could be fair and efficient but it also required trust on both sides. Also there was the threat of getting stuck behind someone ordering a ton of stuff, which uni-queue solve.

Also: the great thing about this convention is that we can assume you know the basics, meaning we can get into specifics – like game design that facilitates role play, what it's like to run jubensha in the British Museum, publishing tips, game prototyping ideas, and much more...

Our designers want to make sure you get the best experience possible, so most games will be fully hosted or supervised.

For 100 players, we need 12+ concurrent games. We can manage that, but if we had 2-3x, we'd struggle to get enough hosts and we'd run out of space!

This might sound obvious but I really like how unashamed Odysseus is about being a larp, while also introducing it to newcomers.

All too often I see companies being really vague about just how participatory they are, whereas Odysseus is crystal clear about what players can expect!

Extremely cool!

I've always thought Edinburgh needed more exhibitions featuring new media, so this was a great way to be the change I wanted to see in the world. There'll be film, video art, music, sound art, performance, interactive body augmentations, virtual reality, video games and photography!

It would be an interesting design challenge to make a Captain Sonar-esque megagame.

Certain aspects currently only work as a two-team game (e.g. radio operator listening to a single enemy captain's movement orders) but there could be ways to have multiple subs with diff. "order frequencies".
