Jubensha Con 2026 (London, May 8-9) is almost sold out after only two weeks! If you're on the fence, don't wait too long...

A big reason we're keeping control of numbers is to make sure we have enough games for everyone, especially since this will be a lot of people's first time playing jubensha.

Super thorough and really polished, while remaining unmistakably grassroots. Very excited about this one!

The key thing here is that she played *social deduction* video games like Project Winter and Dale & Dawson Stationery Supplies (I hadn’t heard of the latter!)

Played Captain Sonar last night! It's been on my list for years – 4v4 real time submarine battle, what's not to like?

Quick thoughts:

- We played three rounds, each taking under 30 minutes. Way faster than I expected!

- Theming is great, esp. w/ verbal commands, e.g. "STOP! Torpedo launch for J7"

There’s a very fun interplay between walking sim designers and immersive theatremakers being directly inspired by each other in the 2010s!

Less so with filmmakers for the most part - I guess no audience agency there - but still.

(I detail all of this in my forthcoming book…)
Five years behind the zeitgeist but, wild watching 1917 and realising how much a single shot film reads as a videogame. It’s a walking sim! That’s the only other place you see that sort of pacing, plotting and location-driven narrative!

The excellent Immersion larp festival in Turku, Finland is running a Space Suit design challenge!

They have three cool-looking suits with built-in walkie-talkies and wrist computers with messaging. Lots of potential! I won't be entering but I am fascinated by larps using wearable tech...

I've seen a lot of people criticise Polanski's "theatre" in ads like this or in his delivering of a "contract termination" to Palantir recently.

Here's why I think this misses the point of why theatre (but let's call it embodied performance) is vital in politics...

The people demand more short, high quality deduction games!!
TR-49 is our best launch, ever, in 14 years.

I admit I'm surprised! Made in 9 months, mostly as an experiment to learn Godot, and an excuse to play with some actors. (And for me to do some acting.)

One thing I think IS cool: it's a "one-sitting" game. 4 hours; $7. No commitment required.

Psst - over half the tickets have sold out in just two days!

We might be able to increase capacity a bit but we’re limited by the number of GMs we can rustle up, plus the space itself…

(More announcements about games coming soon!)

I'm at that point writing my book on immersive experiences where I search for things (e.g. jubensha, the Galactic Starcruiser) and the top results are my own blog posts, which is simultaneously a good and bad sign

Struck by how Chaoyang Trap's 2022 piece on jubensha remains one of the best-written takes on the phenomenon even today.

I've always thought that Disney stumbled by forcing Galaxy's Edge and the Galactic Starcruiser to stick to a very specific moment in the Star Wars canon, so mixing things up is a good move, whether you prefer this or that trilogy.

Nice to see pics from Punchdrunk's new "live action video game" Lander 23. I was booked in for a very early showing, but it was cancelled when they delayed opening.

Punchdrunk (well, Felix Barrett) has spoken for many years about wanting to make something with more game mechanics – here it is!

It's become commonplace to insist the Vision Pro would be successful if people could watch sports courtside via "immersive video" but the more I think about this, the more it feels mistaken:

"Just let me sit courtside and watch an NBA game. I don’t need a scoreboard, I can look up and see it."
Apple: You (Still) Don’t Understand the Vision Pro
The first live sporting event was broadcast in the Vision Pro, and it’s a big disappointment. The experience could be amazing, but Apple actively ruins it.

I was reminded of the 1937 game Jury Box recently, which some claim as an important predecessor to murder mystery games, jubensha, and larp.

Based on what little information is available, I'm not seeing a good connection!
