The Garnet Fire has burned through a place I have worked since 2002. A place I hold dear. We knew this wasn't a matter of if, but when. Unfortunately the leadership on the Sierra National Forest didn't have the same urgency that we did. My eulogy for Teakettle.

BREAKING: Scientists are staging a “science fair” in the lobby of a Congressional building to tell elected officials about the critical knowledge the US will lose because their research grants have been canceled.

As a scientific community, it is clear that we don't have the option *not* to communicate the importance of our work to the public. Our engagement needs to include but also go beyond press releases accompanying papers – we need to teach our students about how science is supported by the gov't.

Excited to share this piece written with my fellow ESA students @alisonrobey.bsky.social and Pa-Shun Hawkins on our experience advocating for ecological science on Capitol Hill. We provide guidance for ecologists hoping to engage in science-policy work.

Are you ready for Trump's 'big beautiful' fire storm? It's coming. They will try to blame fires on lack of logging, arson, DEI, inept govt agencies -- anything but the primary factors, which are human-caused warming & the massive cuts made to fire suppression staff & budgets. Get your masks ready.

⚡️🥵🔥This week’s lightning and next week’s heat are pretty much a slam dunk for a busy mid- to late July. Today’s updated outlook for the next four months: www.nifc.gov/nicc-files/p...
July’s sig fire potential outlook shows above normal risks in much of the northwestern part of the country (red), in addition to Hawaii, TX and Puerto Rico. August’s outlook expands the above normal risks of large fires in the West and Plains and adds MN back into the mix. Hawaii still at risk as well. September continues to look bad throughout the West Coast, Great Basin, Hawaii, northern Rockies and Upper Midwest October should still be a busy month for fires in the West, Hawaii and northwest MN.

Another day testing the limits of resilience.

The Alexandria NSF building was designed for the NSF merit review process (gold standard), complete with a floor devoted to panels.

Now we aren’t allowed to have in person panels.

The loss of US science leadership will haunt this country for decades.

It's like evil Gifford Pinchot drew a map. That's a lot of national forest land in the Lower 48 and a massive amount of BLM land in Alaska. Some of the best public lands we have will be available for purchase, but not by people like you or me.

Thanks to @wilderness.org for pulling this together.
