"Liberal" does not mean, as some of its supposed friends think, a permanent equivocation about "both sides." Nor does it mean, as some of its critics believe, a weak-kneed unwillingness to fight. Yet working out just what it does mean, just what it is liberals fight for, requires ongoing thought.

Ultimately you're not going to independent-professions your way out of a completely fucked polity. You have to do the work of politics to create respect for professional competence but accountability to the people's representatives. It's a tense balance and it takes ongoing support to keep going
