A text post by user cowboybrunch - may 29, 2024 i love when characters get angry when they're frightened. shelter dog characters. i love when they bite, not able to tell the difference between a hand that feeds and a hand that strikes. there is no difference. a hand is a hand is a fist. i love characters that are deemed unadoptable. unloveable. and i love when someone loves them. i love when someone sits with them, patient. they don't flinch at the snarling and snapping. they're not trying to fix it—there's nothing to be fixed. This is you, all of you, and I'll wait. Because one day, one day you'll take the treat. Go on, draw my blood. Spit and curse and rage. You're safe with me. One day, you'll feel safe with me. Text post from lgbtlunaverse: Obsessed with characters who portray themselves as worse than they are. Who are lying to everyone including themselves about it. People generally assume if someone's lying about themselves they're trying to look better but sometimes they're trying to look *worse*. They attribute agency to where they had none, add intent to accidents, try to convince everyone that this is something they *did* instead of something that happened to them. Text post from bluemoonscape: Big fan of characters who "kill" their younger selves. Characters who resent the past version of themselves for letting them get hurt, who look at that kid and feel revolted by the foreignness of it. Characters who feel they have to cut the child out of them like a tumor because it's hurting them too much and *if I don't kill you you'll kill me.* Nearly nothing remaining of that past self but for the little connections and mannerisms they can't kick, and when it shines through, it's a terrible, tragic thing, because the child is still in there. It's in there and it's grotesque in its suffocation. But it's there.

Vachir /also/ wields an axe, though his isn't enchanted or anything of the sort. I saw the pvp one and realized the bulk and dangerous looking appearance of it was pretty much spot-on for what I imagined he'd be carrying.

It's a symbol of regret at this point, a reminder to do better.

Zhyk's axe was a gift to him by his late fiancé. It's specially enchanted to store aether, something very useful to him in battle or to ease any voidal incidents. He's able to alight it with his aetherfire as an additional threat.

For him, it's both sentimental and extremely useful.

Temur was a quiet, gentle man with boatloads of patience. He noticed Zhyk's stubborn, yet curious nature & cultivated it while not pushing too far whenever he saw signs of awkward nervousness.

He basically learned how to adopt a stray, fickle cat & proved himself extremely trustworthy. #starcrossed

How obvious he thinks his discomfort is. The pluck of bandages wrapped around his hands, the rub of his heel across a plush sofa cushion, the press of his thumb against a palm, the tug at the hem of his shirt or the buckle of his vambrace, the touch against a notched ear… Yet there's always a nettling at his side, a questioning of his motives, the urging to do something that does not sit well with him— (he is a quiet man, shrinking from the harsh glint of judging eyes) —words and actions that draw attention to his person in a way he does not know how to respond to other than in the same manner as a wild animal cornered against a wall of stone. Caustic snarls, raised hackles, body coiled taut like a spring; he would run if it did not give birth to rumor and worry and those who might fret even more over him. So his fingers find the edge of dark bandages and fidget, feeling the sensation of a frigid cold hidden beneath. Perhaps this time, his discomfort would be noticed and understood.

Zhyk receives a delivery—a letter and a meal. It doesn't go as expected.

Zhyk glanced at the letter once more, silently mouthing the words as he read to ensure he had the information correct. His stomach growled as he packed away the parchment, memorizing the fine scrawl as Felix's for any further correspondence. Curry and a loaf of bread. A good offering. He wedged himself into the hollow groove at the base of a tree—how the postmoogles were always capable of finding him was a mystery—and pried open the box. The smell stung his nose. But surely Felix had remembered what Zhyk said? Again, his stomach grumbled, angry at the delay. Zhyk huffed a sigh, pocketing the fire shards included for later use, and rummaged for the included spoon. He scooped up a heavy serving, tail eagerly swaying, and ate. "Swiving—!" His mouth was aflame. His eyes watered. Seven hells, his throat burned. His spoon clattered against his dish as sweat beaded across his forehead. The violet fur of his tail bristled, puffing up in a way it rarely did, as Zhyk coughed and sputtered. "He calls this mild?" The words spat beneath his breath, Zhyk tore into the loaf of bread, praying it would assuage the heat ravaging his mouth. "Bastard prob'ly sent it for the boat comment." He ripped another chunk of bread free between his teeth, chewing with vengeance. Spoon and curry returned to their box and Zhyk wrapped it up tightly so it wouldn't spill inside his rucksack. He'd see if dousing the dish in fresh river water would help any when he camped next or suffer with keeping it as an emergency meal. …a very, very last ditch emergency meal. He sighed and hefted his rucksack, slinging it over a shoulder. The last of bread in hand, he began to walk, distracting himself from the remaining sting in his mouth with wheat and wandering. He would make sure Felix knew exactly how much he appreciated the dish the next time he met the man.

He stands before the mirror, eyes shut as a tremor wracks him. Cold fear roils in his gut. What will he see this time? The specter of a friend, body crumbling to dust? The shadow of a mother, ever walking onward? The ghost of a mentor, stained in blood and sin? The shade of a lover, heart in his hands? The threat of a monster, looming yet entwined? He blinks. It's all of them and none of them. His exhausted eyes and sullen brow, his bloodied lip and perpetual wounded scowl. He is memory and regret, guilt fused into a future he did not ask for.

I adore flower symbolism, so have both OCs!

Zhyk: Hyacinths, specifically purple (sorrow, regret, forgiveness) & a white calla lily (funerals, devotion, resurrection/life).

Vachir: Snapdragons, specifically deep reds or the black prince variety (strength, grace, protection, mystery, deception).

His fingers curl around his tail, onyx scales pressing against leather. What movement had begun slows, then stills, only the restrained wiggle at the spaded tip remains. It changes to a gentle, refined sway—something expected of him (a gentleman, a mentor, a leader, a guard) and not the uncouth exuberance of someone— unburdened —half his age. A tap against his wrist. A familiar gruff voice to his left. "It's not bothering anyone. Let it be." He hesitates. Slowly, one by one, each digit peels away. His tail flicks, then flitters, then resumes its eager, sweeping wag. He smiles. Free.
