hi! thanks to my friend @tiffanyleigh.bsky.social for sharing & gathering daily puzzles as alternatives to NYT's ubiquitous subscription puzzles. i left a few out and added a few more, then sorted them to make things easier. if something you like is not here, let me know!

I am Black American. My people were enslaved, segregated, and degraded for hundreds of years. There was a time when it was considered politically untenable to abolish slavery and legally dismantle Jim Crow. It got done. So, yes, a free Palestine is a political possibility. It is inevitable.

this is really interesting, and was on my timeline right after i had to tell youtube to dismiss its entire homepage segment describing it as "your home for 'life of a showgirl'," the rolling stone homepage takeover and tweets, etc. like . . . she's funding some big psyops on this one

Sun roasted potato. 🥔 Photo from my collection, 1954.
A pretty shorthaired calico cat reclining on her side and back in a strong window sunbeam that is baking across a carpeted surface. She is positively glowing in the light and it’s a gorgeous contrast to the stark edge of the sun where the carpet appears to become almost completely black. She’s in a rectangular island of light.

to anyone i told about this show, i take it back, the third episode has main characters say "r***rd" like twenty times with no consequences, which is so bizarre i don't even know what to say except fuck everyone involved with it (including glen powell unfortunately)

whoever invented this type of closure, i hope they got really rich
a square, shallow container with a black bottom and clear top. the words "1984 collectable" [sic] are printed on top in white. tall container with a yellow bottom and clear top. the top reads "perfect image inc." with a phone number and a sticker reading "1021"

i had like 2 cups of leftover pho broth, so i added more broth, shredded carrot and zucchini, sliced celery and ginger, and some cubed tofu, then seasoned with basil, lime juice, a little sugar, and hot sauce. IT IS GOOD

i love technology like this, and i'm excited to report on research from universities. the fusion startup scene, though, is full of giant blowhards who are willing to promise anything in order to get investors. these include "AI" boosters like sam altman, who are clueless, malicious, greedy dumbasses
a gmail subject line says "AI+Fusion Summit" gross

(image shows a black cat with a sweet, curious expression, who's sitting in front of a laptop that someone probably needs to use, but it belongs to cookie now, is the thing)

art meets the cutting edge, in a recent experiment that condensed the effective speed of light using extremely high speed photography. the results may help scientists verify decades-old theories about how and why these objects appear rotated at light speed.
Scientists Just Made Light Speed Visible. The Images Will Break Your Brain.
The method involves stitching together many thin “slices” of light reflecting off an object.

hi! new from me, a stellarator nuclear fusion reactor in germany has tied the world record for fusion runtime. hitting milestones is cool, but don't get it "twisted": we're still a long, LONG way from plentiful energy using these reactors. a VERY LONG way.
A Nuclear Donut Broke a Fusion Record While Chasing the Ultimate Prize: Unlimited Energy
The W7-X stellarator reactor is now purportedly on par with more common tokamak fusion experiments.

fwiw, work like yours has always resonated for me, in a good way, as like an aspirational kibitz of new york life. not a guide for what i'm going to do anytime soon. and i know i'm not alone in that! the future is multi-mode

you may not know that all the existing natural diamonds are from the same one time period, and our planet will never have new diamonds.
