On this day: The Bread and Roses Strike begins in Lawrence, Massachusetts, redefining what Solidarity could look like and providing a rallying cry for generations of workers to come.
On January 12, 1912, thousands of textile workers in Lawrence, Massachusetts, walked out on the job. The young, mostly female workers at the textile mills weren’t typically viewed as workers who could be organized. But their courageous strike defied expectations. The strike is now associated with the phrase “bread and roses,” the pursuit of “bread” in the form of fair wages and “roses” meaning dignity and respect on the job. It’s a rallying cry the labor movement uses to carry us forward in our fights – across industries, demanding justice.

In January 2025, PSA Airlines announced plans to move its headquarters from Dayton to Charlotte. While the airline now celebrates the opening of its new headquarters, it has forgotten the workers who keep the airline flying.

On January 5, 2024, Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 suffered from an explosive decompression event after a door plug on the Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft blew out. Thanks to the heroic and decisive actions of the Flight Attendants and Pilots, everyone made it to the ground safely.
Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 departed PDX for ONT. Shortly after takeoff, a door plug on the Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft blew out, causing an explosive decompression. The Flight Attendants and Pilots of Flight 1282 worked quickly and heroically to ensure everyone made it to the ground safely. The crew handled the incident with bravery and composure. All 171 passengers and 6 crew members survived the harrowing accident.

On December 28, 1978, United Airlines Flight 173 departed Denver bound for Portland, OR. The flight ran out of fuel and crashed in a suburban Portland neighborhood. Two crewmembers, Flight Attendant Joan Wheeler and Flight Engineer Mendenhall, and 8 passengers died. We will never forget.

For too long, the aviation industry sought to make victims feel crazy & paint our concerns as hysterical & hyperbolic. But we are beginning to see widespread acknowledgement that this is a real issue. We look forward to working w/ lawmakers to make our cabin air systems safer.
For years, we’ve advocated for straightforward solutions to prevent fume events. Mandate bleed air filters or bleed-free systems Finalize sensor testing for bleed air Mandate ICAO guidelines Mandate crew training to facilitate coordinated response Modify current maintenance reporting system Create crew reporting system to collect centralized, standardized dataset Stronger oversight of aircraft maintenance procedures to prevent repeat events AFA recently briefed Congressional staff on fume events – the problem, the causes, and how to fix it. We look forward to working with lawmakers to make our cabin air systems safer for everyone.

Last week, AFA along with @repchrispappas.bsky.social hosted a briefing on Capitol Hill about contaminated air and toxic fumes on commercial aircraft. This Capitol Hill briefing is a continuation of our decades-long work around contaminated bleed air.
The first crew injury report related to fume events was filed in 1952. Over 70 years later, there are still no requirements for bleed air filters or sensors for cabin and flight deck. Fume events occur when engine oil from the compressors or hydraulic fluid from neighboring systems enters the air supply system. Breathing in toxic fumes causes short- and long-term health problems for crew and passengers, including neurological issues. Historically, fume events were characterized as overreactions. Even today, airlines and federal agencies underreport fume events. AFA’s research found over 3,300 oil/hydraulic events in FAA databases over a 10 year period. The problem is systemic. Our aircraft air systems are woefully behind, which puts crew and the flying public at risk. Seals in compressor can leak oil Hydraulic lines can burst/spill Oil, hydraulic fluid can be ingested; includes from overservicing Engine wash procedure can cause oil seepage Ducts, packs hard to clean No sensors No complete bleed air filters Can’t reproduce inflight conditions on the ground Soiled ducting, packs
