A year ago, a red-bellied woodpecker slammed into my office window. Do birds get concussions? Anyhow, for a while it seemed like the poor thing wouldn’t make it. After about 20 minutes and much careful tenderness on my part, it flew away. Last night’s painting celebrates life in all its nuance.

Taken this weekend as I sought to find art in the wild. I want to be present in mind, body, and spirit for whatever other gifts Nature offers me.

I went to bed thinking “maybe I didn’t make something others would consider art today, and that’s OK”. And then, like an old friend that visits unannounced at whatever hours to prop your spirits up, came a haiku:

through the night, winds howl
window frames burst at the seams
loneliness barges in.

I’ve been flower harvesting + drying, cutting paper, setting up soaking periods, and recycling materials in service of my art. Is that, on its own, art? I see beauty in the process; the preparation for the act itself deserves reverence.

To brave the storm of your sorrows
You must first dare tend to selfless woes.
A tightrope walk through a somber canyon you follow,
to brave the storm of your sorrows.

a few weeks ago, out of a surge of inspiration and curiosity, I jumped head first into paper-making. as with any spontaneous foray, mistakes were par for the course. starting the second batch now, this time with white paper. #arteveryday #tendingtoabrokenheart
