New figures show that 1,185 people lost their lives directly due to alcohol in Scotland last year.

While this is a 7% fall on the previous year, it is still far too many. Each one is a preventable tragedy.

New survey shows over 1/3 of young people report seeing alcohol-related content from businesses and influencers online.

🚫 If a product is harmful enough not to be sold to children, it should not be marketed to them, online or anywhere else.

Marketing regulations to protect children are needed.

📢 This week, we wrote to @heidialexander.bsky.social to welcome the government’s proposal to lower the legal drink-drive limit in England and Wales.

Lowering the BAC levels to 50mg per 100ml could save over 150 lives every year, according to NICE modelling.

"...if you ask any member of the public, I'm quite sure that you'll get the answer of two pints or two units - that's wrong."

However, it will be important to also introduce accompanying measures to support this. As outlined in our work with BMA last year, proper enforcement, awareness and access to alcohol treatment will be key for success.

Good to hear that reducing the drink driving limit is under review by @heidialexander.bsky.social.

England currently has the highest drink driving limit in Europe. Bringing the limit in line with our European neighbours would reduce the number of RTCs and fatalities.

We have signed this letter to Wes Streeting (@rthonwesstreeting.bsky.social) highlighting the current scale of alcohol harm, and how insufficient the measures in the 10 Year Health Plan are.

There is so much more that the government could do, as the letter explains.

Not nearly so expert or eminent as the signatories, but I endorse this.

The absence of alcohol from the ten year plan when alcohol related harm is one of the areas of public health that’s worsening quickest was a major oversight.

Each year in England alcohol contributes to over a million hospital admissions, with 30% of the adult population in the UK engaging in risky drinking.

As @aha-uk.bsky.social members we’re calling for government to revisit its approach to tackling alcohol harm & commit to a strategy to address this.
