Simply beautiful photos of climate scientists in action. And really well explained - worth a read.

Day after day, the desire to understand the planet compels people all over the world to don their snowsuits, wet suits and business suits in the service of climate science. Explore their efforts in Quanta’s photo gallery:
Photos Capture the Extreme, Beautiful Work of Climate Science | Quanta Magazine
Building an accurate model of Earth’s climate requires a lot of data. Photography reveals the extreme efforts scientists have undertaken to measure gases, glaciers, clouds and more.

The dance of titans has started in the North Atlantic with hurricane Imelda and hurricane Humberto 🧵!
Satellite image of storms Imelda and Humberto in the North Atlantic near the east coast of the USA. Both storms are at less than 900 miles from each other or around 1400 km, at this distance they start to affect each other.

In discussion with a computer scientist from the University of Cambridge last night:

Me: "you've described some of the things that AI is good at. How would you describe the category of things it's not good at?

**pause**

Him: "Anything where it has to be right".

A cloud radar in space that can also get ocean echoes? WIVERN is selected for @esaearth.esa.int EE11!

OK, I did have a different proposal for EE11 called STREAM ... and I also got involved in the EE11 proposal SEASTAR... so this is really not optimized for currents

A swirl with an eye and a nose? Nope, not weather—just river sediment in Yana Bay, seen by Sentinel-2. Nature sketches its own cartoons in one of the Arctic’s remotest deltas.

Sediment plumes like this form when rivers carry fine particles into the sea. Currents then swirl them into vortices, reshaping coastlines, altering ecosystems, and even affecting how sunlight penetrates the ocean surface.🟢🌀

Full disk satellite view of Earth centered on Africa and Europe, with partial views of South America and the Middle East. The satellite image showing Earth from geostationary orbit, captured by EUMETSAT's Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) satellite using the GeoColor RGB composite technique. The image displays both day and night views of Earth, with the daytime portion showing true color representation of land and clouds, while the nighttime portion appears darker with visible city lights. White cloud formations are scattered across the image, particularly along the intertropical convergence zone. The image provides a full disk view of Earth, showing the planet's curvature against a black background.

A cool halo today 🌞 We could also see the upper tangent arc but it doesn't show in the pictures...

Yes, time flies! Lots of new research done since then, it'll be exciting. We're still on the same room though 😃

Wow! I was at the 2016 colloquium (which has by far the most beautiful room I've ever presented in), and can't believe we are approaching a decade already!
aida-alvera.bsky.social
It's about time we start organizing the Liege Colloquium for 2026! Submesocale Processes in the ocean will be the topic, a revisit of the Colloquium of 2016. 10 years of advances!

I'll try to document here the journey towards organizing such an event, maybe there's interest? #LiegeOcean26 🌊🧪

My horizon yesterday was too high to properly see the eclipse, but I did manage to see it partially. It's always humbling to see these events. Shaky hand-held picture, just for the records 😅

And here a short #timelapse of the #eclipse. You can see the dim red area shrinking as the moon comes out of the Earth's shadow. 🔭 🧪

Best glory I’ve ever seen from a plane! It’s an optical phenomenon that occurs when light interacts in and around tiny droplets of water in the clouds, in the direction opposite the sun. More complex than a rainbow. Here’s a link to some more info: www.zmescience.com/science/phys... #optics #physics

Delighted to see that the next Meteosat satellite will launch on a European rocket.
MTG-I2 will complete the imaging constellation for Europe's next generation weather satellites, providing vital warnings for severe weather, wildfires, and more.
eumetsat.int
Following an extraordinary meeting of the EUMETSAT Council on 2 Sept, we can announce that MTG-I2 will launch on an Ariane 62 rocket, scheduled for 2026 🚀

MTG-I2 will help Europe’s NMHS further improve nowcasts of severe weather, vital for early warnings.
