Nice government revenue stream from cigarette excise you got here in Australia. Would be a shame if it were handed over to organised crime by jacking up excise to levels smokers aren’t willing/capable of paying. @paulrgregoire.bsky.social @jamomartin.bsky.social @algore09algor.bsky.social

Our understanding of drugs are too often unevolved, prejudicial and misinformed.

We struggle to see alcohol, nicotine, sugar and caffeine as drugs while misleadingly regarding all prohibited substances as dangerous. Then we conflate any use of prohibited substance with addiction or problematic use.

While the 38 experts consulted "broadly agreed in most cases, there were significant differences between those with personal experience of SUD and those without on 10 of the recommendations" for policies around in-hospital drug use.

Alison Knopf reports:
In-Hospital Drug-Use Study Shows Lived Experience Key to Better Policies
It sought consensus from 38 experts on how to approach patient drug use. Responses from those with personal SUD history differed in key areas.

Bans on safer nicotine products fuel black markets, not health. In Thailand, the underground SNP trade is a multi-million-dollar industry, putting consumers at even greater risk. Regulation works—prohibition doesn’t. bit.ly/BansSA

Public health advocates are raising concerns that bans on safer nicotine products (SNPs) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), particularly across the Asia Pacific region, are worsening smoking-related harms rather than reducing them.

We are continuing to put pressure on the government to ensure public interest content is not impacted by class 2 codes. Get more information at linktr.ee/scarlet_alliance
Age Verification risks censorship of essential health information.
A current Senate Committee Inquiry is looking into the impacts of the Search Engine Code for class 2 content New online safety act class 2 codes require search engines, app stores, hosting services, ISPs and social media platforms to implement 'age assurance' mechanisms. These codes are meant to begin from December 2025-March 2026. Age assurance technology creates privacy and data risks. Tech services cannot guarantee that non-porn content (like sexuality education) will be protected from age-gating or removal. There is currently a Senate Committee Inquiry looking into the class 2 codes for search engines. Image of camera lens. Text over top of images reads:
Online safety is not just removing or restricting content. It is also about ensuring that all people can access accurate information and maintain privacy online. We call on the government to:
Refer all class 2 codes to the Senate Standing Committee for the Scrutiny of Delegated Legislation and Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights.

Explicitly protect sexual and reproductive health education, LGBTQAI+ community support, drug related harm reduction, and sex worker advertising and resources from age gating.

Work with public health and sexuality educators, organisations, peer and harm reduction groups to ensure public interest content is not restricted.

If you support organised crime, remember to argue for maintaining Australia’s sky high cigarette excise. How else can they afford all that bling & luxury cars? @jamomartin.bsky.social @drbfreeman.bsky.social @publichealthaus.bsky.social @melissasweetdr.bsky.social @aliveadvocacy.bsky.social

“As always, the question arises as to what they have to hide.”

Organizers' “worst-case scenario is to have people who have benefited from tobacco harm reduction telling their stories."

As COP11 looks to exclude pro-THR voices, advocates fear the policy outcomes, reports @kiransidhu41.bsky.social:
WHO’s COP11 Will Threaten Tobacco Harm Reduction Behind Closed Doors
The November event has a registration process designed to "exclude rather than include"—and advocates fear the results.
