I’ve been reading my grandfather Sherman’s Civil War letters, and they show how conflicted he was. Early on he wasn’t an abolitionist, but my grandmother Ellen’s brothers fought for the Union and his brother John Sherman was anti-slavery. His letters reveal the pressure he felt working in Louisiana.

this is nothing new. There's a great quote by Lincoln pre-civil war (that I sadly cannot find right now) about how the slave states are not content to just have their way of life, they demand that the non-slave states admit that their way of life is superior
