Network spreading and local biological vulnerability in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis |

The effect of spherical projections on spin tests for brain maps | doi.org/10.1162/IMAG...

Spin tests are the de facto null model for map-to-map comparisons in brain imaging. Why don't they perfectly control false positives? @vincebaz.bsky.social explores ⤵️

This important new study in Movement Disorders looked at folks w/ REM sleep behavior disorder, a common early sign of Parkinson’s. The results suggest that fMRI may reveal changes in brain networks long before symptoms of PD or dementia w/ Lewy bodies fully emerge. @parkinsondotorg.bsky.social

Companies charging and people paying up to $500,000 to select embryos with high IQ potential, even though that isn't possible. No less ethical.

2. When I give seminars about this, I ask my (professional scientist) audience "How many of you believe that anthropogenic climate change is real?"

Almost all hands raise.

I then ask "How many of you have read the IPCC report or equivalent"

Fewer than 25% of hands raise.

How does cerebral #BloodPerfusion map onto micro-, meso- & macro-scale brain structure? @asafarahani.bsky.social @misicbata.bsky.social &co characterize blood perfusion in the #HumanBrain, revealing how it changes with age & in #NeurodegenerativeDisease @plosbiology.org 🧪 plos.io/46AEURS
Normative blood perfusion map on lateral and medial views of the inflated and 2D flat cortical surfaces (fsLR). Borders and areal names of the multi-modal Glasser parcellation are overlaid on the flat surface. The figure highlights the non-uniform distribution of perfusion scores across the cortex, with areas that have sharp gradient compared to their underlying perfusion score levels (e.g., LIPv and MT/MST).

Integrating and interpreting brain maps | doi.org/10.1016/j.ti...

Imaging and recording technologies make it possible to map multiple biological features of the brain. How can these features be conceptually integrated into a coherent understanding of brain structure and function? ⤵️

"The Quebec government has served the school with fines totalling almost $30 million for violating the province’s language law by admitting too many students to its English-taught continuing-education programs over the last two years."

LaSalle College says it helps French thrive, so why is Quebec cracking down on it?
Instead of punishing the school, the CAQ government should be using it as a model for francization and the principle of harmonious “vivre ensemble,” the school’s president and CEO says.

In collab with @alaindagher.bsky.social @misicbata.bsky.social and Shady Rahayel, we used the SIR model to computationally model neurodegenration as a function of the structural connectome and gene expression. SIR cpatures the dynamics better than axonal connectivity (very bad!) and gene expression!

In sum, we use genetics to uncover three different facets of impulsivity, each with different genetic and neurodevelopmental associations. Further deciphering the complicated interplay of genetics and environment is an exciting future direction⭐
