I see *several* food banks and drives for military-related folks all the time. There are constant questions about how to get WIC and SNAP in spouse groups.

If we get to the 12th with no confirmation of military pay, it will not be good.

This probably sounds minor to many of you but closing the commissaries will....not be taken lightly by the US all-volunteer standing military. The PX is everything (literally, as it's not just groceries!)

Commissaries still sell discounted products to authorized patrons as they have since 1867. The commissary value proposition goes beyond significant savings to include clean and safe stores, healthy options and excellent customer service. This important benefit reinforces DOD's efforts to improve the economic security of the Force and provides a strategic "insurance policy" for military families during times of national emergency -- pandemics, hurricanes, earthquakes and more. The commissary ensures food security for military families in all situations they may face.

Today’s customers save thousands of dollars annually on their purchases compared to similar products at commercial retailers. Customers receive substantial additional savings through promotions and special sales. The discounted prices include a 5-percent surcharge, mandated by Congress, which covers the costs of building new commissaries and modernizing existing ones. The savings that military families enjoy by shopping their commissary improves their quality of life, in return for serving our Nation.

Surveys consistently rate commissaries as one of the military’s top non-pay benefits. Many young service families, particularly those stationed in high cost-of-living urban areas, simply could not make ends meet without the 25 percent or more price savings provided by commissaries against the local marketplace. The Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) is more committed than ever to its mission of delivering this critical benefit to military families, enhancing their quality of life and readiness. DeCA remains steadfast in its vision: "To be THE grocery provider of choice for its eligible patrons -- delivering a vital benefit exclusively for the military community and their families."
