While studying medicine at the University of Edinburgh in 1778, Charles Darwin’s uncle (by the same name) cut his hand dissecting a child’s corpse. He died within days, likely from meningococcal meningitis. Death was often inescapable for those trying their hardest to prevent it. #histmed #histsci

Wax anatomical model of a dissected head and neck, created by the British sculptor Joseph Towne for the Great Exhibition of 1851, held in London. At the Great Exhibition, there were approximately 100,000 objects on display from over 15,000 contributors around the world.
