Why does he look like the wind-swept villain of a Jane Austen novel?

TL;DR - I think collectivism isn’t the real boogeyman of liberal/libertarian thought.

Thus, a major task of a Liberal Political Order should be nurturing the collectivist self-concept of its citizenry, to support the development and maintenance of autonomously adopted values and norms across the population.

Ultimately (though I didn’t quite make this argument), I think the libertarian objection to collectivism has more to do with opposing Foreign Imposed Exogenous Institutions. An Endogenous Institution of collectivist-based norms wouldn’t be a problem.

Part of my argument, for which this might be a poor medium, was that a collectivist self-concept (i.e., identifying oneself as a part of a greater whole and taking on the normative force of that identity) is integral to a well-functioning moral order.

They understand themselves in terms of their relationships and duties to things outside of themselves. This leads to a different cost benefit analysis, where negative impacts on their environment and relations (even to people they don’t know) weigh much more heavily.

In Asian cultures, it’s well studied that there is a “collectivist” conception of the moral geography. That is, instead of seeing one’s self as an atomistic, complete system, Asian cultures tend toward a self-concept of being part of a larger whole.

“It’s ok if you are relatively worse off because the outcome is better for the whole.” The objection, I would argue, comes from an individualist self-concept.

Importantly, libertarians often write about collectivism as other people ignoring the moral weight of the individual in favor of the group as the moral unit. It’s received as a kind of dismissal of the individual’s import.

Because this was part of my dissertation work, I think it’s important to note that collectivism in this case isn’t necessarily the same as what someone like Hayek would write against.
