I tag emails into folders but keep them in my inbox for a while (because I suffer a LOT from "out of sight, out of mind" otherwise). Then periodically I go through and archive to get them out of the inbox, but keep them in their specific folders.

This is such a cool response from your students!

Yeah, I've mostly slept through nighttime earthquakes but this one woke me up over in north Berkeley!

Very excited to read where this work wound up going!
alexisonfluids.bsky.social
may take you up on that depending on what my student says :) this is super helpful already though, as someone who didn't go through the labs myself but know a few students interested in them

That's actually helpful! I wanted to make sure these postings weren't, like, "no later than January" or something similar. Thanks!

Hey, mind if I ask what the start date would be for this position (or really the LANL postdoc positions in general)? Trying to figure out if this is relevant timing-wise for a couple of students I know :)

kelp forests are one of my favorite habitats!! i have been watching a million documentaries about them so naturally, i had to draw one.
a colorful kelp forest illustration of harbor seals, sea otters, garibaldi fish, california sheephead fish, senorita fish, urchins, sea stars, and an octopus hiding in the background. hiding is a generous term.

In the midst of all the turmoil in science, some great opportunities at Berkeley now:
1) Miller Institute postdocs & visiting professorships,
2) faculty position in any Earth & Planetary Science field in my department,
3) faculty position in physical climate science in Env Sci Policy & Mgmt

There's one I've tried for twice that is 5 pages (including budget justification) for 5 years, and both times I got feedback that was like, "you should have said more about this, this, and this". I'd have loved to! It was only 5 pages!!!

Realized today that I have been using matlab for literally half my life, now I need to go sit and think about my choices

Since it's Tenure-And-Promotion-To-Associate letter writing season, a few years ago I compiled a set of materials that I found useful in crafting my letters. They might be useful to you too, perhaps.

Ooh I fell prey to this phrasing myself despite knowing better! That yellow/orange/red colour scale on tsunami.gov makes this an easy mistake to make, I think

Thank god we are early in the summer and August isn’t coming soon. Now let me just take a big sip of coffee before I check the calendar

seems like a really natural consequence of most phone calls being scammers/junk – I've also started answering without saying anything if it's not a recognized number in my contacts

I loved the little headphone jack cassette tape! (mine was hooked up to an ipod shuffle that was basically a big USB key)

Go check out this new paper led by @lewinsam.bsky.social in his foray into the world of observational data! It has been a lot of fun getting to dig into some of the ISDE observations and to build up collaborations with some awesome scientists (both on this paper and more generally). Enjoy!

If you happen to be interested in ocean mixing variability, stratified turbulence, or the fate of shoaling nonlinear internal waves on the inner shelf, our recent study has just appeared in JPO: journals.ametsoc.org/view/journal.... Fun to work on this with @alexisonfluids.bsky.social & crew! 🌊🌊🌊
