Starbucks is closing stores and cutting 900 jobs in a restructuring move.

1,100 jobs were slashed earlier this year.

Reminder that Starbucks’ CEO made 6,666x more than the company's median employee in 2024.

This was the widest CEO-to-Worker pay gap in the entire S&P 500.

ajs1998.github.io/double-pendu...

I made a simulator to explore the space of double pendulums! It runs in your browser with WebGPU, and it's very fast!

I wrote a little about it here: alex.leaflet.pub/3lxizbtwyg22d

I always regret putting comments at the end of a line of code rather than on its own line above, and I do it ALL the time anyway.

Learning C early on made me overprioritize code golf and I hate it. Err on the side of verbosity. Newlines cost nothing. Abbreviations suck. Comments are rad. </mantras>

The chatbot interface for LLMs is such a dishonest product with the illusion of competency. LLMs (the technology) are super cool and obviously competent at some things. But the AI chatbot (product) built with LLMs tricks its users into believing a human-like thing is on the other end.
Didn’t want to believe this was true. It’s true.

Read: "NASA staff and funding have been cut, and Trump-appointed interim administrator #2 decides not to prioritize worthy technology."

Nuclear power on the moon sounds good to me, so does nuclear propulsion. We can have both, AND good social programs. Trump contaminates everything he touches.

I'm realizing that being a Trump supporter or a transphobe are both instant cancels for me. Beloved celebrities, friends, family, whoever. I can't forgive myself if I treat them with respect. There's no other quality that could redeem them. They're incompatible with a good world.

Starbucks had the worst CEO-to-worker pay ratio out of all S&P 500 companies in 2024. Their CEO received $97,813,843 in total compensation last year, or 6,666x more than Starbucks’ median employee.

We stand with @sbworkersunited.org as they fight for their fair share.

This is why I can't engage with people who see AI as a black and white moral thing. This is an incredible achievement after just a few years of research. There's no telling how exactly AI will affect the world, and it boggles my mind that many people claim to know it must be all bad.

Plurality-wins voting and the electoral college have made everyone crazy. America is a broken democracy and it won't be fixed until voting is more involved than choosing between one of two morons every 4 years.

The time between 4AM to 8AM occupies the same space in my brain. It's all just "morning" to me. But now that I have to wake up early I realize that's a whole 4 hours I'd normally sleep right through. Now 1/4 of my awake hours.

I need to know everything about crochet. I understand how to do it, but I don't get why certain stitches result in different shapes and angles. how do people go from an idea in their head to a physical thing made of yarn?? let me engineer crocheting

The Browser Company saw that browsers were stagnant and boring, so they built Arc which is fun and has cool features!

*1 year later*

TBC finds that Arc is stagnant and boring, so they're building Dia which will be fun and have AI and cool features!

Long live Zen.

American voting explained: America style

There are 2 guns on the ballot. You get to vote for which gun gets to shoot the other gun in the face. The gun college gives all the bullets to the winning gun.

The next election is in 2 years. This is the only way to express your political desires.

I wish our democracy was a little more direct.

We go to work for almost 1/3 of our waking life to shape the economy. But we vote once every 2-4 years to shape the country, for parties with shitty approximations of our values. Most people don't even vote because it's so pointless.

Bluesky should use this as marketing material. They're not censoring anybody, it's just that blocking people actually works here.

My network here is more enjoyable and productive than any other website. I'm not gonna complain about how underrepresented the nazis are. It's their own fault.
I've been asked about my evidence for saying Bluesky is a left-wing bubble. Mostly, my eyes. But here's a striking table from a recent pre-print on Bluesky: the progressive side (A) is extremely dominant in political discussions, to the point where the opposition is often essentially unrepresented.

The Banach-Tarski paradox is used as an overly complicated example to show how the real numbers are unintuitive.

A clearer example is to just do 2*[0,1]=[0,2]. There's a 1:1 mapping between the numbers in each interval, yet it looks like more area is created from nothing.

I implemented an algorithm to randomly tile a grid with dominos. Here it is on a torus where they can wrap around the edges like Pacman.

Having never played The Last of Us, I've been kinda disappointed with the second season. It's fine, but the storytelling is just weird. I'm led to believe for several episodes that Ellie's blind revenge mode came outta nowhere. The reason came too late and it didn't really land for me.

Bix won't even know how consequential her decision was. It was the right decision and it couldn't have been any other way.

What a great show. Andor + Rogue One is my favorite star wars story, and it's not even close. They totally nailed it.

Having never cared about Catholicism or religion in general, I didn't expect to be so eager to learn about who would replace Pope Francis. I don't get to pick world/religious leaders, so I just have to hope we get more like Francis and fewer like Trump. Leo seems like a step in the right direction.

Rogue One + Andor is the best of Star Wars. Nothing else comes close for me. The S2 finale of Andor isn't even out yet but I know it'll be great.
