We’re thrilled to share that our very own Matt Cavanaugh has been chosen for the Emerging Vision Scientist Program, where he will advocate for congressional support of vision research. We’re so proud of all he has accomplished so far and for his commitment to advancing vision care!

This fall, I'll go to the capital to share my research with congressional staff and advocate for funding of scientific research on the sense of sight.

Funding decisions made today determine who gets to see tomorrow. Support the National Eye Institute!

The National Eye Institute (NEI) is at risk of being consolidated into a larger Brain and Neuroscience Institute under proposed NIH reforms. This would dilute its vision research focused mission and j...

I agree. The FDA approves drugs, not the NIH.
But I have the impression that the distinction between research (like the NIH funds) and policy (like the FDA sets) isn't clear to many critics. So exalting the NIH's success at creating lots of drugs could just fuel more suspicion in some audiences.

Many good points in this post!
But for some audiences it's a risky strategy to emphasize all the FDA-approved drugs. Many people like RFK Jr and his supporters believe, not without reason, that Americans are over-prescribed drugs and that the pharmaceutical industry has corrupt influence.

During natural reading with eye movements, the left posterior fusiform cortex reflects both fixated and upcoming words in parallel—and distinguishes whether an upcoming word is skipped or fixated. A new preprint from Graham Flick @grahamflick.bsky.social!

DOGE recommends cuts to the FAA.

Hundreds of workers get fired, including those tasked with producing air traffic navigation maps.

Now Starlink is reportedly in line to take over a $2 billion contract to upgrade the nation's air traffic control systems.

See how this works?

Russell Vought & his ex-wife Mary have a daughter with cystic fibrosis, who is being treated with elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor, drugs developed with the support of the National Institutes of Health. Now Russ & Mary are trying to destroy the agency. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Cutting NIH funding is a bad idea for the economy. "In fiscal year 2023, every $1 of NIH funding generated approximately $2.46 of economic activity." Other facts here: www.nih.gov/about-nih/wh...

Out now in Brain! Using direct cortical stimulation in 49 patients we show distinct regions of ventral temporal cortex that selectively knock out the ability to read or name. Word-selective VWFA can causally and reliably be isolated from other visual language functions.
