I think of this film fondly mostly because it’s a refutation of what Star Trek already largely was by that point: all about battles and war and conflict. So to have a film that explicitly sees the crew mutiny against these values was refreshing. It’s just sad they couldn’t get back to exploration

I think this take has merit. But sadly, for me, I find the new elements to be fairly cliche generic sci-fi tropes that don’t feel distinctly Star Trek. They’re new for Star Trek, but not for sci-fi, where they’re largely a dime a dozen.
