Tickets bought to Refused's farewell gig in December. Millencolin to support. Almost feel like 15 again.

Academic authors, here's a peek into the black box of journal publishing from an journal editor if you can bear it:

Inspired by @roberttalisse.bsky.social, I tried to find some of my old concert tickets the other day but haven't found the right box so far. One of my social media apps then reminded me of this, posted on this day 12 years ago. Cornell's voice and lyrics are dearly missed.

Bluesky is for sure the (?) top platform for scientific chatter currently (with LinkedIn).

But frankly, more engagement is needed here and transitioning from #academictwitter is part of broader fragmentation. And 🦋 is still incredibly US based, also for research.

Scientists Are Flocking to Bluesky
Academics once loved Twitter—but in the age of X they’ve abandoned it in droves.

Friday morning's pop-up message with data-for-training pre-selected. I prefer the typical "Claude and Coffee" welcome message. Opting out. #Claude

Democracies often fail to reverse authoritarian takeovers.

"Autocratizing leaders have an inherent advantage over their democratic counterparts: They may simply break the rules to achieve rapid political change."

I agree. I just can't shake the feeling that Bluesky isn't really taking off, at least not in my field where most migrated to LinkedIn. While you can see quite some reposts (your original post an example), these generate comparably little dialogic exchange, generally. That's what's missing, I think.

Enjoyed this conversation between Adam Grant and Ed Helms. Might resonate at times with academia - applications for funding, rejection, peer-review, etc. - learning to deal with "a festival of failtures", "building calluses" and the importance of community: youtu.be/hYYNCYmlbVA?...

This.

When people throw around "evidence-based practices" and "science of ______," they aren't engaging in conversation or nuance. They aren't acknowledging complexity or, consequently, reality.

These have become euphemisms for "My way or the highway" in education. And they're being weaponized.
jessenathaniel.bsky.social
Exactly. My gripe with people’s focus on “evidence-based practices” is there’s no such thing as context-free evidence. And the range of factors that can make implementing a strategy to fidelity ranges to accounting for disability to class size to “did everyone eat this morning?”

That matters.

We once spoke with a well-regarded dev psych who told us that of course they know & work with actual cognitive scientists and they would be the first to tell you a classroom shouldn't look like a cognitive science lab.

As people in the northern hemisphere are beginning to return to work, I'm bumping a post about our new paper on #postdigital GenAI literacy that came out earlier this summer. Close to 4000 accesses on Springer already! Hope it can contribute to interesting discussions. 🌱 doi.org/10.1007/s424...

This. 👇 Only had positive experiences — some only a few exchanged emails, others grew into research collabs. I hope to send more such emails this coming semester.

When is the last time you sent someone a (quick) email to tell them you appreciate their work?

It takes only a few minutes and means a lot to people, junior or senior, (pony) famous or not.

Particularly important in today’s world, where people get so much negative feedback from anonymous trolls.

"Taken together, the combined effect of these factors means that countries are unlikely to improve their democracies after an authoritarian episode—or even to maintain the level of democracy they had before- hand for very long."
