The crystalline cloakmouth, a creature from the deep oceans of the birrin world of Chriirah.

Prey lured to the glowing esca find themselves impaled by the glassy jaws, before the veil-like mouth closes around them.

This fellow used neural upscaling because sadly the original only exists in a tiny form.

A predator that lurks above the ever-moving lichen mats of its forest home.

Pheromones are used to attract curious prey, which gather confused beneath the creature. Those not swift of foot are impaled, to be relieved of their liquefied insides.

Clever friends; I have a conundrum for the birrin story.

The characters were going to travel high above their valley to repair a radio antenna, necessary to talk to a distant settlement.

But would they even need to do this?

Couldn't they just use a little transmitter and the ionosphere?

The 'Tandem Call', a powerful, dangerous experimental birrin aviation test-bed.

It was designed by House Kendi to test many rediscovered aerodynamic principles from before the Fall War.

The wisdom of combining these principles all into one airframe remains to be seen...

On the milling of bluestick in the valley of Two-Sky River.

A damselfly I painted many years ago to see if I could, and as an attempt to see if there was a market for stock images of invertebrates. A few such images actually lead to work!

How I design a creature.

I often find 3D models, even VERY basic ones, are useful in guiding a painting if there are complex elements at play (wiggly fins, too many legs etc).

A little 2025 exploration of the 'Gardener Worm', a creature from early in Subnautica: Below Zero's pre-production.

This being would have hauled out onto the ice to expose its internal 'garden' to the sun, photosynthesizing unique compounds for its metabolism.

Some of the diverse life that lives among the floating garden beds on a birrin bluestick farm; a cash crop of great value but challenging cultivation.

From my research trip to Lake Mungo. What was once a great lake dried out tens of thousands of years ago, and is now a great baking basin and dune formation strewn with fossils, and signs of human habitation.

Among my more unusual earlier commissions; Post Rock album covers for local Melbourne band Mu Theory!

An illustration of 'Ghostbot' and its inspiration, the Black Ghost Knifefish.

In my madness, I didn't use any 3D for the robots in this book. All manual.
