one thing that's still bugging me about this essay is: you can't talk about the lack of neg music reviews today without talking about the entire state of music journalism, which few outlets are even interested in investing in anymore because it a) doesn't bring in the kind of traffic they expect..

this is a HUGE part of my experience growing up as both a music fan & wanna be music journalist. I saw the women I loved to listen to routinely destroyed in the press by beloved journalists, often, it seemed, for sport. "mean male critic" was a caricature for me, to a point.

No one ever talks about the fact that the halcyon days of rough-and-tumble rock criticism was a sexist sausage fest (with a LOT of really bad writing--I have the entire RS archive and man there's a lot more chaff than wheat in there)

there are much worse problems.

that said, as someone who loves writing reviews & has written thousands & is proud of that & thinks reviews are important, seeing culture coverage, critics & reviews constantly take it on the chin for the past decade--esp last few years--has been really fucking hard.
