In hopes to make it feel better, I think the main difference between Byler and Soriku is that Kingdom Hearts has a writer who actually knows what he's doing. Whatever happens, Sora and Riku will always be the core of the series and the ending of it will be accordingly satisfying, I'm sure of that.
