iirc balatro is a love2d game, which is a lua interface over sdl? this sounded to me like something to do with enumerating devices on startup. a quick search later and this bug report could be related:

the shop i used it at, it was nice. our admin was very careful about defining workflows that enabled us and provided exact steps and a nice place to refer to all of our work. i always assumed the hate i've seen for it was based on how many footguns it gives to people to set it up poorly

you can't! you can set all of your tracks to "Automatic record-arm when track selected" and you can use Ctrl+Alt when clicking on S to exclusive solo, but otherwise you need scripts or custom actions bound to specific hotkeys or something similar to achieve this, it's not a default setting
