My 2nd blog post of the week, and 2nd in my series about saving searches, is all about changing to the new EBSCO platform. My initial perspective on good and bad things, and a focus on the process I used to prepare, ensuring I continue to have access to all my #SystematicReview searches #AliceWrites
EBSCO changes: adjusting and preparing
An academic librarian’s report on exploring the old and new EBSCOhost database platforms for literature searching, with a process for keeping access to saved searches.

My 14th #DARTS9 slide was about advocating for librarians' involvement in research, and specifically in systematic reviews. And sharing my research experiences. I wouldn't have talked about all of these - I do like to share my experiences rather a lot!
Research Catalyst Cohort train the trainer ethos – cascaded learning
Creating and continuing a blog
Writing for professional organisations
Sharing research experience on social media
Twitter, LinkedIn, BlueSky
Advocating for shared online content from library conferences
Explaining and demonstrating librarian research skills
To academic staff
To the world
Advocating for systematic reviews to be done properly…
Illustrated with a book, The Chalet School Revisited, by Rosemary Auchmuty and Juliet Gosling. Red cover, with a picture of several girls. One has her head stuck in the back of a chair.

Today the 1st episode of season 5 of Six Minutes came out (if you have a subscription) & this evening we listened to it (& Rewind), sitting in the dark, me & my son & my daughter (who hadn’t listened to season 4 - I think she’s into it again). I fell asleep during Rewind! #OntologicalOctober #Day7

Honestly if you want at least some insight as to why "classics of literature" are constructed as they are, it's worth knowing the market imperatives of the time. American science fiction and fantasy started in magazines and drugstore racks; short stories and 40K novels were how people go paid...

I feel like this probably explains a lot more of the so-called classics of literature than is immediately obvious on the surface. 🤔

As I do every year at this time, I’ve been admiring the autumn leaves on the trees in the John Crank Gardens.
Big trees, leaves in differing shades of green and orange, against a blue sky. Big trees, leaves in differing shades of green and orange, against a blue sky.

Today I taught my Bloomberg class for the first time in about 18 months. And remembered that I really enjoy teaching this class (while also always wondering if I should make it longer in order to slow down and for all the content. And wanting to do more different classes) #OntologicalOctober #Day6

I was so tempted, after teaching (2 different things) & prep all morning, to sit and eat my lunch at my desk. Now that I’m sitting up in the staff room, with sun shining in & a hot plate of food in front of me, I know I’ve done the right thing. The emails are important, but will still be there later

Working on my slides for teaching, and another thing I’ve noticed is that the full text options for a result don’t all display automatically. You have to click on a dropdown menu to see, eg, PDF. This was for an industry report. Will have to check later to see if it’s the same for articles.

Today has been a good day, but a long one. This morning feels like age ago (I remember my son saying this about yesterday). My highlight is probably how nice the autumnal weather has been. #OntologicalOctober #Day5

Today, travelling back from a chess game, we had delays on the tube. Thankfully despite just missing our planned train home, another one was already on a nearby platform waiting to leave not long later. And we got a table, meaning I could continue researching on my laptop #OntologicalOctober #Day4

Without the knowledge and without the critical thinking skills instilled by print, many of the citizens of modern democracies find themselves as helpless and as credulous as medieval peasants — moved by irrational appeals and prone to mob thinking.

There’s this experience of making progress with something you’ve been sticking your head in the sand about, and a feeling of satisfaction and learning for the future. But also an awareness of being nowhere near where you want to be, and urgency to get there. #SystematicReview

Because they were only looking at the planes that returned to base after a mission. Planes that were shot down couldn’t be examined. So what those red dots actually represent are areas where the plane can get shot and still fly home. 3/

Not as many books as in previous months. I was reading two long books for my print and ebooks, which I’ve now finished (in early October). And even with audiobooks, I stopped halfway through the month as I got caught up listening to a podcast backlog! #2025reads #SeptemberReads 3/3

As I sit reflecting on my day, trying to work out my #OntologicalOctober #Day3, I was thinking that I hadn’t left the house today. This isn’t quite true, as I did take the food compost to the back of the garden. But it has been a very full on work day, with cooking and cleaning on either side.
