But by building courses where every moment of every class is directly, explicitly, and experientially tied to outcomes that students are genuinely invested in, we not only get them to activate their brains and engage actively, we also build intellectual and emotional 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 with an

We are tempted to cheat and outsource things that do not feel 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘧𝘶𝘭 to us in the moment.

The core reason for this is that the course, and its components down to each segment of each lesson, become increasingly - and more viscerally - 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗳𝘂𝗹 . People are motivated by 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 .

My first response is always to consider the slogan my teacher licensure program adopted: 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 . I have come to strongly agree with this.

Celebrating their renewed motivation because of the progress they saw in learners was such a relief after walking with them through tough phases. "The kids are actually speaking!" is the most beautiful thing I can hear.

𝟵. 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝘀. The most challenging part of this work is helping older, more experienced #teachers shift their methods to more effective ones.

I had one recording session with an elder where we dug deep into her culture's core values, talked about what they really mean in practice, and discovered that they can largely be summed up by "get up and help others whenever you can." I was moved to tears by how much this aligned with my own value
