Here's my introduction to Jean Rabe, which appears in the Designers & Dragons Second Origins books I'm now working on.
III: Introducing Jean Rabe. Jean Rabe started her professional career as a journalist, studying at Northern Illinois University before moving on to a newspaper. However, she quickly got tired of the blood and gore of being a crime reporter. Meanwhile, she’d been playing D&D since 1975 and was also a regular attendee of science-fiction conventions, which is how she met Penny Petticord. Petticord told Rabe that she was planning to quit her job at the RPGA and Rabe should apply for the position. Rabe did, but TSR tried to get her to take the job of Gen Con Coordinator. Rabe was uninterested: she wanted a job writing and editing, which was what the RPGA job offered. That’s how Rabe become the RPGA’s fourth Network Coordinator on March 23, 1987. And write and edit she did, not only taking over Polyhedron magazine (1981-2002) but also producing numerous tournament scenarios, sometimes alongside her husband—chemist and roleplayer Bruce Rabe. One of their earliest adventures had already appeared in C6: The Official RPGA Tournament Handbook (1987). Much of the 1989 RPGA explosion would be their work as well. Rabe would remain the Network Coordinator at the RPGA through early 1995. Beyond her RPGA work, Jean would also produce a number of original RPG designs over the coming years. She would be even more successful as a novelist, starting with Red Magic (1991).
