So very sorry to see this Rachael. Truly no words, from one scientist in a targeted field to another. Sending you and your team my best wishes.

“essentially closing research operations in my group” = no new experiments save 1 recently funded grant. Spending freezes limit our ability to order supplies and reagents. We need to focus remaining funding on maintaining personnel + analyzing existing samples w whatever’s left in the cabinet

This is horrible to post, but I may as well post it. We are essentially shutting down research operations in my group, which is focused on treatments for pediatric brain cancer. I’m a well funded investigator, and there’s no choice. Science can’t function without the stability of NIH

The Trump Administration is eliminating the Office of the Chief Scientist at NASA.
The current head of that office is Dr. Katherine Calvin, an expert on climate change, global modeling, and international scientific negotiations.

Doug was a NSF program officer for a few of my projects before stepping into his role below. His loss is an example of the many negative impacts. I speak often on the value of collaboration and cost sharing to get the most bang for our buck. Losses like Doug’s work affect everyone in the U.S. 🧪
Photo of text from Doug Kowalewki: “On Tuesday Feb 18, 2025 at 10:00 am, I, along with 167 of my dedicated colleagues at the US National Science Foundation (NSF) were mass terminated without cause. We were told our continued employment would not be in the public interest.
In my role as Partnership Lead, I delivered on bringing in 25-30 times my salary of external funds to the NSF for use on research grants. The admin recovery costs from partnership funds to NSF more than recouped my salary and benefits; in essence I was a no-cost employee to the federal government and added millions of external funds per year for federal research grants. My work was motivation by the fact that investment in science (and our scientists/engineers) is critical for national security, robust economy, and health of our nation.
While driven by this mission every day, what I will miss most are the amazing colleagues I met along the way at NSF. Their innovation, expertise, and dedication rival none. To all of my NSF, federal, and philanthropic friends I say thank you and keep up the amazing mission!”

Did you know that in southwestern #BritishColumbia, tectonic plates are moving at about the same speed your fingernails grow and that we get 3 types of #earthquakes here? Every day, small earthquakes are recorded (1000+/year).
For details, see:

A map showing the location of deep, and shallow earthquakes in southwest British Columbia over a 15-year period. Also, a cartoon showing the tectonic setting with the different tectonic plates, including the North American Plate, the Pacific Plate, and the smaller plates that are between them and subducting beneath North America.

I think many of us would leave at this point and agree.

We can have a similar special programme in the EU as well. We already had (a small) one during Trump's first term 🧪🇪🇺

If I were Canadian PM I would immediately:

1. Create a new $15B science fund

2. Offer any credentialed US scientist funding for lab startup and replacement of NIH grants if they move to Canada

3. Immediate permanent residency

4. Citizenship after 2 years

Overnight a science superpower

Fair. I get it. No judging, it’s a tough decision these days on what is going to hurt or help us all in this specific case. But, I wish you well at least!
alpinesciences.bsky.social
Disgusting decisions being made at this point. 🧪
alpinesciences.bsky.social
This is one egregous example of a decision like many others being made by this administration that has ZERO ZERO ZERO benefit to anyone BUT the wealthiest two who are causing this to happen and some of the politicians and billionaire class that are standing by watching this unfold. 🧪

Juneau receives 2 million visitors annually & MGVC is one of the major tourist stops for visitors. It provides significant economic value to the city while also providing environmental knowledge to visitors of Juneau and Alaska. 🧪

I have been told that performance of these people was nothing short of stellar. No bad or unsatisfactory performance evaluations were possessed by any of these staff. And many had received awards from the agency, if not multiple awards. 🧪

Part of the letter employees received: “…Agency finds, based on your performance, that you have not demonstrated that your further employment at the Agency would be in the public interest. For this reason, the Agency informs you that the Agency is removing you from your position of… immediately” 🧪

Please share this REAL impact! AK colleagues tell me 17 of 20 ppl were terminated from Mendenhall Glacier Visitors Center (MGVC) in AK. I’ve worked w/ this professional and wonderful group serving the public & they have a display in their museum about the Juneau Icefield Research Program (JIRP). 🧪

“But despair is not an option,” writes Gretchen Goldman in Nature. “It is important to remember that notable gains have been made in federal scientific-integrity protections in the past two decades.” 🧪
‘Despair is not an option’ — how scientists can help protect federal research
Government scientists in the US must be clear-eyed and continue to serve the public.

Agreed! Another great read from Porter for sure and definitely alarming. What’s going on.
